Yes Barbara the usual trade winds that blow thru the islands are not there in the past few days because of the troughs in the western and central atlantic that are dominating the usual ridge that always is north of the islands. It has been warmer than normal also here in Puerto Rico as the south winds prevail. But in the next couple of days at least a ridge will build to the north and that will bring the trades again.

just posted a picture of one of those sunsets..
thanks for the info Luis.
I assumed it was because of the troughs. It is most unusual for this time of year.
I can imagine that PR is hot and humid too, because you usually have even more humidity there than we do here.
I'll be glad when that ridge builds up.

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Reminds me of the sunsets I use to see when I lived in the Keys back in the 1980's.

I love sunsets and sunrises at the beach. I just got back from Nags Head yesterday. Boy am I sad because I had to leave those beautiful Outer Banks! I was there for four beautiful days with my singles group friends! I did not want to leave! It was quite chilly for the OBX in October, highs in the upper 60s, lows near 50, dewpoints near 48 degrees, but it was nice and sunny with a few high, thin cirrus clouds. The surf was unbelievable, my friends and I spent five glorious hours in the surf, body surfing as some of the waves topped 6 feet! The sand was full of multi-colored shells, many of which had beautiful multi-hued patterns on them! My travel bag was heavy as heck because I brought so many of them home with me!!! :)

There is nothing quite as nice as standing on the balcony in the morning, breathing in fresh morning sea air and taking in a spectacular beach sunrise!!! We had the seagulls, the fresh salt air, the sea spray and fresh coffee with breakfast and I had all my cherished friends there with me!!!! :) There were over 40 in our group! We literally took over three beach cottages for four days at Milepost 14.5 in Nags Head. Man did we ever have such a great time!!!

NOW I understand why people live on the beach in Florida!!

The heck with the 'canes! I want to live there too!!! I want my beach sunrises and sunsets!! I love the beach!! :):)

Is that where the "doldrums" are that sailors are always getting stuck in?

Fantastic picture msbee! The sunrises and sunsets have been glorious - sky and water so still they mix up the horizon in colors...maybe to keep us happy with the *no air in the air* the last week or so (and make the gnats give us a break). We had a couple of wonderful rains last night, think it dropped the temp a lot, both outside and human wise!
(The "sailing" doldrums, as far as I have experienced, are south of Bermuda, but you wouldn't bet on that around here these days - you could kayak to St. Thomas from here and not get wet right now!)

It's funny, just last night I watched my summer vacation video's (which included Hurricance Jeanne). I was in St. Maarten this past May and it looked just like that. It was the prettiest sunset I ever saw, also with a rainbow behind us.
MSBEE, I want to come back. Of my 7 day cruise, St. Maarten was my favorite day.

I want to spend a week there.
When I was there, it appeared to be condo's on a golf course that was still damaged from a hurricane. What was the last hurricane to hit St. Maarten?

st pete
the last hurricane here was Lenny in 1999
that resort you saw was Mullet Bay. It was damaged by Luis in 1995 and has never been rebuilt because of ongoing court cases over how the insurance money was used.
That situation is a real scandal here on the island unfortunately.
