Halloween costumes?

So, if you dress up for work or play or whatever -- what are you going to dress up as?

Me? I was having a hard time deciding until I came across a yard sale on Saturday morning. Of all the awesome things, the lady holding the sale was the curator of the 1900 Storm Museum! Anyway, there were a handful of blondish-gray wigs on one table. And then she had some old dresses and costumes on a rack. It hit me the minute I saw the prison-striped uniform -- Martha Stewart! The wig was the priciest of the two things. The uniform was a mere buck.

Well, ya know, if one existed that could scare me, I might say yes. Exorcist didn't faze me. Psycho? Nope. The Ring might have if it hadn't been for a couple of gossiping kids sitting behind us in the theater, running their mouths during the non-intense parts. Everyone was getting fed up with them. I'm looking forward to The Grudge. It looks like it has the same "feel" as The Ring.

Supernatural horror doesn't scare me -- you know, ghosts, vampires, haunted houses. On the other hand, psychological thrillers with serial killers and stalkers offer a bit more excitement, but even Silence Of The Lambs, which most people say freaked them out just bored me.

A person can jump out from around a corner and startle me. But I've never really felt good ole fashioned spine-tingling fear. I've had some people tell me I'm brave. I just think I'm fearless. There's a world of difference. I'm not brave.

I never dress up and have usually focused on my kids' costumes. Now that they're older (14 and 17) it's iffy if they'll even dress up or go out. A tossup every year. If they prefer passing out the candy then they want to dress up. My oldest is a senior in HS this year and seniors are the only class permitted to dress up the Friday before Halloween. For days now she's been working on a costume. She's decided on Raggedy Ann. Each time she goes out for more accessories I have to hear how she wandered over into the adult section for full costumes (since she's a size 5) and how different they are! Yup! She joked once she could use this costume in college next year but then I reminded her that she's on the verge of the nice/nasty costume phase. I'm sure in college you don't see nice, little Raggedy Ann's! I explained that even the nicest, normal costume takes a devious, nasty-dirty turn in the adult world.

That is why I don't like dressing up - I'm too old to wear the benign, simple costumes and you have to very creative when you're an adult. We get invited to an awful 4 siblings' combined Halloween every year. Picture a wedding reception, in a VFW type hall, sitting at long tables on metal folding chairs - knowing only one of the host couples. That's how this party is. And you have to wear a nasty costume to get any kind of prize. We usually RVSP no but this year we feel compelled to go. Dang. And this party is not costume optional - dang again.

I figured out long ago Halloween just isn't my holiday.

Okay everyone....put your thinking caps on.....

Come up with two costumes that can be thrown together with items you have in your closet. Picture a married couple going to a lame Halloween party, where all the costumes are fairly elaborate and costumes are NOT optional.

Basically what I'm saying is this:

- We're probably going to this party.

- I'm a cheapskate, don't want to rent pricey costumes.

- But I want to come up with clever get-ups that will pass as costumes, in an adult way.

- I have a bumble bee costume stashed in the basement and I do NOT want to wear THAT!

Only thing I can come up with are two black sweatsuit outfits - pants/shirt, outlined with glow in the dark tape, in the shape of a skeleton on each one. A neighbor did this once for a party, I thought it was clever, but Jim says - "oh, that's so lame...come up with another idea Mary." So I'm cheating....help me out guys!!!! Thanx.

Well, you could go with Jim dressed as a dictator and you as his wife, and it's cheap...and very adult.

Have Jim tie a rope around his waist with a nice sized potato hanging off the front of it. You do the same, but with a lemon. I'll have to PM you the rest. It comes from a joke about the Clintons and Halloween, but most people might get the punchline without me having to spell it out.
