According to this article: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/Landsea/climo/

... and more specifically, this table:

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/Landsea/climo/table2.html

... it's October 25, at least as far back as 1899.

This is what I've found so far, for the Gulf Coast before 1899:

Latest: Oct. 12, 1886, 120 mph

http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/atlantic/1886/10/track.gif

Second latest: Oct. 9, 1894, 120 mph

http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/atlantic/1894/5/track.gif

Everything up to 1910 has been re-analyzed. Eagerly awaiting the next round of updated info. Even though that table says the latest Gulf major landfall was October 4 (before 1991), I found this:

http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/atlantic/1916/13/track.gif

My guess is that it must have weakened before landfall. Perhaps the intervals used there are too large. Changes happen fast with hurricanes, and six hours is a long time.

Kate tried to become the latest landfalling major hurricane:

Well if there was ever a season that might provide some late season drama this one would be it..Things look dead right now but with everything we have seen this season why not a late season big one.

I hear ya vbhoutex LOL..Many out there have had a nightmarish season & are hoping that there will be no more..I sympathize with those folks but you can't let your guard down because you just never know.Recent monstrous late bloomers like Mitch,Lenny & Michelle scream out loud "Its not over til its over!"

Unfortunately, I know you are right!! Even though it wasn't a major by any stretch of the imagination, I remember driving home from Dallas with a van load of teens trying to beat Hurricane Jerry home in late October of 1989(?). Of course Jerry was one of those tiny storms-80 mph in Baytown(40 mi East of me)while at my house we had a spit and a breeze. Mitch, Lenny, Michelle, etc. as you say drive the point home of NEVER SAY NEVER in the tropics.

Funny you should tell that story..I remember driving home from work one night in Nov of 94 when TS Gordon was buffeting this area, the nature of that storm caused the wind field to be quite large as it passed to my south & it was gusting pretty good & it rained quite hard that night causing some localized flooding..The winds seemed to pick up even more during the early morning hours between 2 & 5,i remember trying to sleep with my windows open & the verticles were flapping all over the place.

That day & night it looked & felt like Sept when actually Thanksgiving was 1 week & half away.
