First Snow!

#1 Postby azsnowman » Sat Oct 23, 2004 8:01 am

HOT DAWG!

We received our earliest snowfall yesterday (22 Oct. '04) in recent memory! Woke up to 2" here in town, Sunrise Park Resort received 19"!! Low temp this morning, 20.1° thus far, with 45 minutes to sunrise, the temp could fall to the upper teens! Better news on the horizon, MORE snow is in the forecast for almost ALL of next week, Tues through Saturday!

Well, here we go AGAIN! "WOOOHOOOO!"

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF 925 AM MST SUN OCT 24 2004 .SYNOPSIS...A WEAK WEATHER DISTURBANCE WILL BRUSH THE STATE TODAY. THIS WILL BRING SOME INCREASE IN WINDS AND CLOUDINESS. THERE WILL BE A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS NEAR THE UTAH BORDER. ON MONDAY...A MUCH STRONGER LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL BEGIN TO APPROACH ARIZONA. THIS WILL DRAW MOISTURE FROM THE SOUTH OVER THE STATE FOR A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS THROUGH TUESDAY. THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL MOVE ACROSS THE STATE WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY...WITH WIDESPREAD RAIN AND HIGH ELEVATION SNOW EXPECTED. IN ADDITION TO THE RAIN AND SNOW...EXPECT MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES...AND WINDY CONDITIONS. && .DISCUSSION...SATELLITE LOOP SHOWING BAROCLINIC BAND OF CLOUDS MOVING ACROSS THE CWA THIS MORNING. FGZ 12Z SOUNDING INDICATED MOISTURE IS MOSTLY MID TO UPPER LEVEL AND AIR MASS GENERALLY STABLE. LOOKING AT DRY WX WITH A MIXTURE OF CLOUDS AND SUN OVER THE CWA TODAY. MAIN FEATURE OF INTEREST IS THE LOW DEVELOPING OVER THE PAC NW AND DROPPING SOUTHWARD INTO THE STATE AT MID WEEK. GFS SLIGHTLY DEEPER THAN THE ETA BUT BOTH SIMILAR ON TIMING. AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM EXPECT WINDS TO INCREASE FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY AS FLOW ALOFT STRENGTHENS AND PRESSURE GRADIENTS TIGHTEN. WV IMAGERY INDICATING A POOL OF MOISTURE OVER N MEX AND MODELS BEGIN PULLING THIS NORTHWARD ON MONDAY. ALTHO LIFT IS WEAK WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO SEE LGT PRECIP OVER THE HIGH TERRAIN AREAS FOR BOTH TOMORROW AND TUESDAY. CURRENT MODEL RUNS INDICATE WEST COAST TROF WILL BOTTOM OUT OVER S CA WITH COLD FRONT MOVING INTO AZ ON WEDNESDAY. THIS APPEARS ATTM TO BE A MOIST AND COLD SYSTEM. COULD BE ANOTHER HEAVY PRECIPITATION EVENT FOR PORTIONS OF THE CWA...WITH SNOW LEVELS DROPPING TO AROUND 5500 FEET BY THURSDAY. WILL NEED TO MONITOR SITUATION CLOSELY FOR POSSIBLE FLOODING AND WINTER WEATHER PRODUCTS. CURRENT ZONES HAVE TRENDS WELL IN HAND ATTM. DF

That makes sense, y'all are having an early winter out west while we bake in the south in the warmest October on record. Share some would ya? ;)

with the current storm track coming down from NW Canada and then across the southwest you should have plenty of chances for snow.

Not necessarily since inside slider tracks are usually dry for AZ. The system has to hook out over CA and pick up either Pacific moisture deep enough to make it across the SoCA mountains or slow it down enough to set up a ST moisture plume into the state. Remember that in the western mountains, a significant snow is more than one foot anything less is just flurries.

Good news indeed for the Southwest. Yall do need the moisture bad.

Hope this keeps up for months. Even if it means a warm winter here in Florida
