Well, since I completely missed the point of Mike's reply to Shawn's list, LOL, I'll give this topic a go.....my list. Can't narrow it down to a specific genre or #1 anymore, although #1 used to be GWTW....

Mary - I enjoyed "The Towering Inferno," by one of the original masters of disaster flicks -- Irwin Allen! He did three with Patty Duke ("Fire!," "The Swarm," and "Hanging By A Thread").

A bit of trivia - principal photography of "The Towering Inferno" was completed on 9/11 of '74.

Whoa...that date is creepy Shawn. I thought of TI during the short time the trade towers were on fire. Millions have said it was like watching a Hollywood disaster movie that sad, sad day. Since I've always been into disasters movies, I immediately thought that. And declared - I will not watch another disaster movie, ever again. But I have since, hate to admit it, but the suspense is what I guess I like. And a happy outcome (Independence Day, for one, a real let's get 'em type movie).

I was a sucker for all the Airport movies too. Even the one that went down in the ocean and people were still inside, alive and walking around. This is when disaster movies were getting hoaky.

Mary,

I believe those that thought it was like a hollywood movie were only those who watched it on TV. It was nothing like a movie to my children who were rather unnerved by the fighter planes flying overhead. It was nothing like a movie to the neighborhood child who was hysterical and wouldnt believe that her port authority cop dad was safe until she saw him. It was nothing like a movie for the teachers at school who searched for days/weeks for their siblings, to no avail. For weeks my children slept in each others beds, and we took a different route to get to their dance classes so they wouldnt have to see the skyline.

I guess my point is, a movie is nothing like life.

I never cared for disaster movies, never felt watching people die was entertainment. Certainly dont feel that it is now either.

I don't think Mary was at all trying to say 9/11 was like a movie (fictional). Instead, it was like "watching" a Hollywood disaster movie. Big difference.

It was so horrific and unbelievable and we'd only seen things like that (explosions, destruction, landmarks destroyed) in box-office hits like "Independence Day" and "The Day After." We were shocked that it was real and not happening with aid of special effects on a big screen, with the knowledge that a resolution would come in less than two hours. We were saddened that someone so evil could make life imitate art and make it all so painfully real. We were devastated. For once, we couldn't simply walk out of a dark theater, adjust our eyes to the daylight, and get back to life as we knew it.

Also, a lot of us have grown up "observing" depictions of historic events through movies -- wars, Pearl Harbor, the UT sniper, Kent State, Waco, JFK, etc. Sadly, this time it was something that we watch as it happened and we knew it was happening...and it would change our lives forever.

That is exactly what I mean wxmom - even if you didn't live in NYC or was directly impacted by 9/11, it brought you to your knees. I was sobbing watching it live on TV, b/c I couldn't be there - I was home in Cincinnati. And yes I watched on TV, b/c I could. Others couldn't, were at work and couldn't access a TV but saw the horrific REAL scenes later when they got home.

I have actually heard people say it was so unbelievable that this was happening, that it seemed like a movie set.

But sadly, it wasn't.

I meant in absolute no way to diminish the impact and tragedy of 9/11.

You want to talk about people who went about their day as if nothing happened? Oh I can tell you of one person - my young sister-in-law who never reads a newspaper, never watches the news, is so self absorbed in her own life she can't even fathom what others go thru. She was at the Y taking her child to swim class. When an instructor didn't come out, she and another mom asked why. Instead of taking their children home, they were very disappointed the swim lesson wouldn't continue. They then went out to lunch, while the entire restaurant was sobbing - they couldn't understand why people were so upset. They then went to a park and finally decided well if local malls and closing and planes are grounded nationwide maybe we should go home now. I left her a frantic message at 10 a.m. and got a flip reply back at 5 p.m. - she was too busy with "her day" to call me.

So there, that made me LIVID.

Please don't think 9/11 is something I take lightly. Heck, I'm tearing up right now b/c you took my comments that way.

I didn't mean anything personal by my comments. From what I know of you by your posts you dont seem the type to trivialize something like that. I guess that was why I reacted so.

Wanted to thank you for adding Gone With the Wind to your list. I had forgotten about that GREAT movie. Think it is time for my girls to see that one!

I like funny movies such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Airplane movies, The Naked Gun movies and anything with Adam Sandler. My favorite suspence movie is Silence of the Lambs. I practically have the whole script memorized. I particulary enjoyed The Terminator, Rise of the Machines and loved The Day After Tommorow. I'm sure that DVD will be one of my birthday presents this year. 8-)
