Dyn-O-Mat Returns... (a real live news article)

#1 Postby Steve Cosby » Sat Oct 30, 2004 9:35 am

Apparently, the network of Rathergate thinks they are serious:

I still have these visions of giant tampons floating on the ocean's surface after Dyn-O-Crap does their thing.

They need to arrest this %#%hole. He wants to dump a bunch of crap in the ocean that will not decompose for thousands of years.

With Andrew, the simulated hurricane still had damaging winds in Florida and the Bahamas but it was reduced from a severe Category 3 to Category 1.

Yeah right. It was a Category 4/5 in the Bahamas, NOT a 3!

in the model it was a category 3

research simulations do not and are not intended to have the same intensity as do the observed storms

"Funded by a  $500,000  NASA grant, Hoffman said he has simulated 1992 hurricanes Iniki and Andrew and introduced subtle changes in computer models that altered the storms."

Like it or not, I think you're going to see more calls for research like this. Most people in hurricane regions would want something that would weaken hurricanes if it were available.

However, the long term damage we could do by messing with nature has to be addressed. The Cat 4 or 5 hurricane we deal with today becomes part of some system over Europe in a couple of weeks. If we weakened that storm, and kept doing it over and over again, how would that affect those European systems, not to mention all of the systems that follow after that? It's all one big cycle up there.

Long term, what about crop growth? Potential for droughts and flooding? Ocean currents? I don't think we're ready to tackle this yet. I'm all for scientific advancement, and I think it's great that we are making progress, but this borders on reckless. This could be the next A-bomb.

The goal is for insurers and govt to control our weather, not to mention the political and most of all environmental implications. Scarier than terrorism, man.

The Jupiter, Florida-based company eventually hopes to sell its patented idea to the reinsurance industry — companies that provide insurance to insurers — and governments if it has any impact on subduing hurricanes, Dutton said.
