Well last night was a surprising dry one for San Juan surprise because we were expecting rain showers. But dry air penetrated more faster than anticipated and that was the cause for the lack of rain. However this morning less dry air and more moist enviroment will cause passing showers from the NE as a weak frontal boundary arrives tonight at Puerto Rico. But the forecast of 4-8 inches from days ago busted as that weak broad low pressure moved more east that forecasted by the models leaving us with much less rain.

it wasn't dry for us!
it rained steadily all night.. a light rain with no wind but steady.
my rain gauge this morning said 2 inches.
this morning is partly cloudy..the sun is trying to peek
through.
is there more rain in the forecast?
Well about Puerto Rico we expect scattered showers during the next 24-48 hours as a weak frontal boundary sinks southward while weakening.Brisk winds from the northnortheast haved increased bigtime the swells that today are from 8-12 feet. For the adjacent islands scattered showers too with the winds from the NE.

Strong high pressure to the northnorthwest of Puerto Rico and the low pressure just westsouthwest of Dominica now are creating a tight pressure gradient and that is why the fresh brisk winds rom the NNE to NE.No sailing tonight nor the weekend.

Plenty of rain overnight with some NE gusty winds here.I expect more rain as the frontal boundary still is moving southward and will arrive later today bringing scattered showers. The swells are very high between 8-12 feet so caribepr no sailing this weekend.

Today it has been a rainy day not only at San Juan but at all the northern half of the island.Rainfall totals between 1-3 inches haved fallen in portions of the northern part of Puerto Rico. Also the wind speed has been very brisk and data from various stations indicate wind gusts between 25-35 mph.I saw a report from ST Thomas of gust of 40 mph.Conditions will start to improve gradually from saturday and sunday will be a dry and mostly sunny day.

I've been watching the radar Luis.
That system seems to have been hanging over PR all day and night.
Things in St. Maarten have cleared up. Yesterday was cloudy with a few very light showers.
This morning is birght and sunny but breezy.
I hear we have some large Northern swells coming in.
Hope you get some sunshine soon
Barbara

BETTER WEATHER NEXT FEW DAYS
weather summary for puerto rico
national weather service san juan pr
500 pm ast sat nov 13 2004
strong gusty northeast winds continued to bring showers onto the
north and east coasts of puerto rico. the showers were moving
rapidly off to the southwest spreading wind driven rain over much of
the eastern half of puerto rico and as far south as the interior
mountains of the west. rainfall totals since this morning were
mainly between 1 and 3 inches across many areas in the east.
northeast winds were generally 15 to 25 mph ... with gusts up to 30
mph. a wind advisory remains in effect for higher terrain.
the winds were also piling up water along the coasts not allowing
rivers to properly drain into the ocean. therefore the rain falling
into these rivers caused the rivers to swell and increase to above
flood stage in many areas along the north coast. a flood warning was
issued for these rivers across the north and east portions of puerto
rico where they have been fluctuating up and down depending on the
rainfall. a flash flood watch also continues in effect for the
potential of flooding due to periods of very heavy rain. although
the showers have been moving rapidly southwest ... the grounds across
most of the eastern half of puerto rico are saturated and any
additional rainfall has the potential to create flooding problems.
puerto rico is sandwiched between a broad and elongated area of low
pressure over the eastern caribbean sea and a strong high pressure
system covering the western atlantic. the pressure gradient between
the two is producing moderate to strong northeasterly
winds ... especially over northern coastal areas. as this low pressure
area gradually moves into the atlantic through sunday ... winds will
begin to subside. the inclement weather pattern ... which has
dominated the weather since early this week ... will also slowly
improve ... with fewer showers each day going into early next week.
but for tonight ... numerous showers will continue to move on shore
over the north and east coasts of puerto rico ... vieques ... and
culebra.... especially the east half of the island.
long period north northeast swells ... combined with a fresh to strong
northeast wind flow has created dangerous surf and very rough seas.
wave heights of 8 to 12 feet ... with breaking waves of 12 to perhaps
20 feet will continue to affect the atlantic coastal waters through
this evening before gradually decreasing through monday. coastal
flooding in low lying coastal areas around the time of high tide
will also persist. for this reason ... a coastal flood warning will
remain in effect for northern coastal areas of puerto
rico ... vieques ... and culebra. in addition ... high surf and small
craft advisories remain in effect to emphasize additional hazards
that mariners and beachgoers may face.
Finnally less rain is in the forecast for next week and also the winds will go down as well as the swells.

Wind rain sun wind rain sun - and yesterday for an added treat we had no electricity from early morning til late afternoon, no explanations. No ferries running or planes flying most of Saturday, lots of friends and tourists stuck on one side or the other. Two weddings of mainland people, one here and one on Vieques, totally messed up but a lot of funny stories (not so funny to some I think) about ferries turning back half way between here and Fajardo because people were screaming so loud. I guess 20 foot seas will do that. Crazy wild weather - gotta love the Caribbean.

puerto rico and u. s. virgin islands forecast discussion
national weather service san juan pr

. discussion...
llvl configuration of elongated troughing across the south central
and e carib and high to the nw is maintaining the persistent pattern
of strong nely llvl wind flow and intermittent bands and clusters of
showers. mid level troughing across the atlantic to our ne is acting
to enhance some of the shower activity advecting into the area ... and
then is being further sheared and briefly enhanced by swly flow
aloft locally. morning stlt imagery suggests that numerous clusters
of showers will advect into the local area throughout the morning
before diminishing in frequency this afternoon. isolated cells
overnight have briefly grown above 30k feet and this will likely be
the case throughout the day today. strong onshore flow and high
frequency of showers will maintain flooding potential through this
evening. a gradual decrease in shower frequency should then be seen
across the area monday ... with gfs suggesting another significant
cloud band moving across the area tuesday. another east coast low is
forecast to move off the continent during the next few days and is
forecast to bring a cold front into the local area on wednesday.
upper pattern across the atlantic will maintain the surface
configuration of troughing to our east and maintain a n to ne wind
flow through the end of the upcoming work week ... so a cool breezy
and showery weather pattern is expected to persist for several more
days. high pressure is forecast to build across the region next
weekend behind the aforementioned front to bring about a return to
easterly winds.
&&
. marine...
a persistent nne to ne flow to the west of the elongated trough has
maintained a wind fetch from the central atlantic extending into the
local marine area ... and has continued to generate high and rough
seas. a few regional ship obs have reported wind as high as 30 knots
and seas as high as 5 meters during the past 12 hours ... but these
seem a bit high ... and would expect 12 - 14 feet would be the max swh
that we have seen during this extended event. winds locally have
decreased by a few knots in the past 24 hours and are forecast to
decrease a bit further today through monday before increasing again.
seas will subside slightly during this time to more manageable
heights ... before building again tuesday afternoon and night in north
northwest swell generated behind the approaching cold front. seas
could peak during that time at 9 or 10 feet again ... and are not
forecast to drop below 7 feet across the local atlantic through
sunday the 21st.
Well not as dry as thought before for this week as a new cold front will come down to our neck of the woods by midweek.
Yes caribepr I saw in the news about the ferries not running and all the people stuck or in Fajardo or at Culebra and Vieques. In mainland PR we haved seen many problems with some mudslides in central PR with the most dramatic case a BIG rock that rolled down from a mountain and landed in a house. But thankfully noone was hurt in that house. Many rivers haved been out of their banks or are close to be.

Better weather tommorow and tuesday
tjsj 142023
rwspr
weather summary for puerto rico
national weather service san juan pr
500 pm ast sun nov 14 2004
grey and wet weather was the rule sunday across puerto rico as
clouds and showers blanketed the northern half of the island as well
as the southeast section. major rivers along the north central
section from arecibo to toa baja remained near bankfull or above
flood stage.... and inland across the northern slopes the rivers were
swollen. along the southeast section the situation deteriorated
during the mid afternoon and a flash flood warning was issued. river
rio grande de loiza in san lorenzo was above flood stage and others
in patillas and maunabo were swollen. an urban and small stream
flood advisory was issued for vieques and culebra since showers
became numerous across the eastern waters.
rainfall amounts during the last 12 hours varied from one to two
inches island wide. moderate to strong northeast winds persisted
across the area mostly between 10 to 20 mph and gusty at lower
elevations but 15 to 25 mph and gusty at elevations about 1000 feet.
a rainy weather pattern will continue over puerto rico vieques and
culebra tonight. a slight improvement is to be expected overnight
into monday as the winds turn more to the north and drier air pushes
southward into the area. a flood watch and a flood warning will
remain in effect through this evening as major rivers along the
north remain swollen and others above flood stage.
hazardous marine conditions will continue through this upcoming
week. strong northeast and northeast swells over the atlantic waters
will continue but decrease slightly on monday ... and increase again
from the north on tuesday. the coastal flood warning was replaced by
a coastal flood watch ... since coastal flooding is possible mostly at
time of high tide. high surf and small craft advisories also remain
in effect.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel as dry air is moving south and will invade the area monday making for much better weather than in the past 5 days. However another front will move into the area by tuesday increasing the chances for more rain but after that much drier and sunny weather will prevail from midweek into the weekend.

Yes the radar has been showing the train effect for Culebra meaning shower after shower. But that train will stop as dry air filters in tommorow.
