Women under 21 in harms way...yes or no?

#1 Postby JetMaxx » Mon Apr 14, 2003 9:23 pm

Should women under 21 be kept away from danger zones? Be treated differently than 19 year old men and 24 year old female soldiers?

I say no. Wasn't privat Lynch's group a maintenance or support group rather than a front line group?

While I don't like the idea of women in front line combat units I disagree with any special treatment for general duty or even hazardous duty. A 19 year old young man's life is just as precious. Many horror's are committed in a time a war and gender is no protection against these horrors.

I Would NOT

#6 Postby Aslkahuna » Mon Apr 14, 2003 11:08 pm

want to be the Company Commander or Sergeant Major who had to call in an 18-20 year old male PFC to tell him that he was going out into the combat area instead of the woman assigned to the unit that was being deployed because she was under 21. That would not be good for unit morale knowing that the female was getting preferential treatment. Addiitonally, the idea of giving preferential treatment to 18-20 year old females Army wide would go over like a lead balloon not to mention that it is against Federal Personnel regulations.

Her Choice.

#7 Postby Arizwx » Mon Apr 14, 2003 11:31 pm

The days of the Draft or Enlist as gone.So are 21 yrs old to Vote laws.In many states,18yr olds can drink, get Married, have Kids,Go to College or join Faith Based org. They are legal adults..and most have had a Driver Lic for 2 yrs prior.
It's thier choice..the Volunteer Military.School,Medical,Pay,Training,Travel.
Many things some young people need. Some cannot afford a decent education,or have a shot at a decent furture. It teaches Commraderie..Dicipline and Pride. This is positive.Male or Female is a non issue now.Choice is.
In 1974,I had 4 friends 18,19,20 and one barely 22.All but 22 yr old Kevin were DRAFTED.None came home.No Choice. They were Bright, intelligent College material. No defferment came their way..the timing was off.It cost them thier lives.
This Nation needs a Defense.Period.We are a superpower.Period.We are a Society now,where Women are PhDs..Business Execs..Prison Guards and
B-52 Skippers. This is the 21st Century. The cute little girl became Soldier becuase she Chose to be one.It was her right ,Duty and Privaledge. She is not sorry.Trust me.

It is up to the poster to delete what they said. We can easily change our minds on what we want to say, so we should have right to edit and delete our posts. :)

Yes... JQ, but, the flow of the discussion in this thread, what is posted by others with the deleted posts are now "disjointed."

On Coldfronts advice to rejoint the flow, here is the 'missing piece':this is the place where Jettmax requested the entire thread be deleted because he said he was 'wrong' in initiating it.
I called him out on it..and he/someone edited the deletion request, leaving the blank you see above.
Just filling in the blanks Perry and Coldfront to re'joint' the flow.
Let's continue...shall we?

Debate away...

I just realized I was wrong. I post with my heart...sorry.

DJ and Steve...both military veterans made me see the light. You can't have any troop morale if 18 year old men know their expendable and 19 or 20 year old women aren't?

What I proposed sounded good in theory, but would never work in war. I'm a civilian....I don't think like a military man. I want to protect the next Pfc Jessica Lynch from being captured by the enemy and tortured. I think like a dad and an older brother that loves their little girl...and I consider Jessica Lynch a little girl at 19 and my baby sis Beth at 18 because I'm a civilian.

In reality, you can't tell 19 year old women it's okay to stay in Germany while 22 and 30 year old women know they'll be in the Iraqi desert risking their lives.

As an older brother and a gentleman, I hope this is a wake up call. If you are in high school and are thinking about joining the army to earn college money, don't just think about serving in peacetime in Italy and ski vacations in the Alps...not even if you are a 17 year old girl. Think about Jessica Lynch and what happened to her, and the army in wartime...and then make your decision.

I agree! Well said Perry. We should never lose sight that in war, ugly things happen to good people on both sides of the conflict. Unfortunately, sometimes this is the only way left to prevent even further tragedies. While losses have been relatively low, well over 100 US families won't have loved ones coming home alive! God bless them all!
