Just goes to show you that TS-force sustained wind can do A LOT of damage (with gusts up around hurricane force or higher). In 1983, Alicia hit Galveston as a very minimal Cat 3 (if that). No place in Houston got sustained hurricane-force winds, but the damage was tremendous. Tree debris was piled 10-20 ft high along every street. Every window was knocked out of downtown buildings. No power for a week or two in some areas.
So I believe the reports about Jeanne. It was in an eye replacement cycle at landfall, weakening considerably from the day before. Looks more like a Cat 2 at landfall, and then only a Cat 2 north of the center.
You folks in Florida got VERY VERY Lucky in 2004 that both Jeanne and Frances weakened so much prior to landfall.

I wouldnt say that Jeanne weakened to a cat 2 only because of an H-wind indicating 112KT just before landfall. Now, the extent of these winds may have been in a half-mile wide swath though, if that. This H-wind was based upon the SFMR data.
However, most of the area did only receive strong category 1 to category 2 conditions.

According to Dr. Gray's report, Jeanne made landfall at 105 kts... a CAT 3.

You have to look every day from mondays thru fridays as they put up the reports.Maybe later today another report comes and that may be from Frances or Ivan but no advance signal is seen.

Ivan, partially to end some of the debate on how strong it was at landfall. I call 120 mph, although wind damage in Pensacola city looks no worse than in downtown Charleston, which received cat 2 winds. I believe that Pensacola proper received cat 1/2 winds, with the most exposed beaches, mainly around W. Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, getting into the marginal cat 3 range.

Now with Otto in the picture dont expect to see the most important reports out Frances and Ivan anytime soon but after Otto dissipates they may come out days after that time. They may throw out Karl and Nicole reports sooner.
