Drought-stricken central Vietnam issued a flood alert as rains triggered by an approaching typhoon swelled rivers and swept away at least one person.
Earlier in the week rains in the central region brought relief to rice farmers who have faced drought conditions since September.
Reuters news agency reports that a high flood alert has now been issued for four provinces.
Disaster management officials in the coastal province of Quang Ngai says they are on 24 hour guard.
The typhoon destroyed 200 houses in the southern region where one man was swept away, and a sailor was reported missing after his boat capsized in the storm.
The typhoon, has been downgraded to a tropical storm, and shifted towards the Gulf of Thailand.
Nearly 100 people were killed in floods in October and November.
