Well well, so what I initially took for an outlandish story may not be so out there after all. very interesting hearing the accounts of people from that area who have nothing to gain by being fanciful. As I used to be investigative news editor of a minor newspaper, I may head down there next break I get and poke around a bit.

Please do. I see absolutely no reason why a death toll should be understated.

Tallywx, maybe you should try and do a story on migrant workers too. Illegal immigrants or not, they're people too.

Yeah and I was here after Ivan! There were the same types of rumors here! Give me a break people:

1. There is no logical reason to underreport deaths. Higher death count = higher number of people who leave for next hurricane.

2. They must bring in a @$^# load of body bags just in case there are high amounts of casualties. Just because there ARE body bags, doesn't mean there are dead people, if anything, in them. Sometimes body bags are used for dead animals as well.

3. They always lock down an area after a hurricane...would you like to trip over an electrical wire you did not see?

4. Hearing what 'so-and-so' says about what he saw could really be damaging to anyone's reputation. As a scientist, you must find FOR YOURSELF. What he says could be an exaggeration, he could have mis-seen something, etc., etc.

Until there is verifiable proof-pictures, etc.- I have to believe the actual death toll from any of these storms is close to what has been reported. In this age of total communication and tiny hidden cameras, etc. there is no way IMO that a massive cover-up such as is suggested could occur, unless all of the citizenry were also moved out of the area, and they haven't been.
