Recovery in SE Russia

#1 Postby senorpepr » Mon Nov 29, 2004 9:49 pm

VLADIVOSTOK, November 28 (Itar-Tass) - Traffic was resumed on Saturday night on the Vladitosvok-Khabarovsk federal highway near the city of Ussuriisk, an officer on duty at the Maritime region’s department for civil defense and emergency situations reported early on Sunday.

Traffic was diverted to a bypass road. Meanwhile, road services have managed to clear the highway of ice and snowdrifts. The 11-kilometer long traffic jam is melting away.

The jam of over 3,000 vehicles formed overnight to Saturday because of big snowdrifts and ice amid a strong cyclone. Thousands of people became hostages to the cyclone, getting stuck on a narrow leg of the highway with no settlements nearby.

A powerful cyclone hit the southern and central Maritime region on Friday. Heavy snowfalls were accompanied by gale-force winds.
