Russian winter storm

#1 Postby senorpepr » Mon Nov 29, 2004 9:46 pm

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, November 27 (Itar-Tass) - The powerful cyclone raging in the Primorsky Territory on Friday and moving to Sakhalin on Saturday will reach Kamchatka's coast on the night to November 28.

Storm warnings are issued for all the appropriate services and the fleet, the Kamchatka meteorological service told Itar-Tass on Saturday.

According to the regional emergencies department's forecast, precipitation , sleet, will be heavy in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Ust Bolsheretsk and in the south of the Milkovo region, and the wind speed will reach 28 meters a second on the southwest and southeast coasts. The storm will remain in the region on Sunday.

The storm will subside only by the next day. The cyclone will move to the Bering Sea on November 29-30, meteorologists say.

Meanwhile, Vladivostok has set up headquarters to deal with the cyclone consequences. The main task is to resume transport traffic in the city during the weekend.

More than 200 snow removing vehicles cleared the city's central roads throughout the night. But most roads remained covered with snow by the morning. The traffic is complicated.

All the damaged electricity supply and communication systems were repaired overnight.
Teams of repair workers of the Dalenergo energy company worked throughout the night.
Buildings at some streets in the city were left without heat and water, and the work continued on Saturday morning to resume the supply.

The severe cyclone hit the region on Friday. The precipitation in Vladivostok alone was up to 70 percent of a month's level.

A windstorm of up to 30 meters a second and a thunderstorm accompanied the heavy snowfall.
The temperature went down by six-eight degrees. Lightning strikes cut of electricity and telephone and cellular mobile communication.

It stopped snowing in the Primorsky territory on Saturday, and the cyclone has come to the Khabarovsk Territory and Sakhalin.

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, November 27 (Itar-Tass) - The crew aboard the Kamchatka trawler Khrabrovo, which was in distress in the Sea of Japan, has managed to repair and restart the trawler engine under the storm conditions.

The vessel is safe at present and continues moving along its route. Its engine works.
The problem faced the fishermen when the Khrabrovo was 69 miles from the Primorsky Territory's coast and was caught in a storm with six-meter waves and the wind speed reaching 25 meters a second.

The rescue coordination center, after receiving reports about the trawler in distress, sent the rescue vessels Grif and Yuri Orlenko to help the Khrabrovo.

The container carrier Nikolai Rerikh that was in the area found the fishing vessel and remained nearby to be ready to rescue the crew.

After the situation was settled, the rescue vessels headed for Vladivostok, and the trawler is now on the way to South Korea.
