What Christmas song "gets you"?

#1 Postby Stephanie » Tue Nov 30, 2004 10:25 am

The local radio station has been playing "Christmas Shoes" everyday since they've started to play Christmas music. I'm at work, and sometimes I just have to get up and walk away otherwise I'm going to start to bawl.

Is there a particular Christmas song that has a special meaning for you or "gets you"?

I love "O Holy Night". My mom's was "The Little Drummer Boy", and when I hear that one I get a little teary-eyed.

Amy Grant's "Grown-up Christmas List" is powerful to me. Of course, I don't cry because it's an emotionally empowering song. I can't really think of one song that "gets me" in a sad way except maybe "Do They Know It's Christmastime?"

"Merry Christmas Darling" by Karen Carpenter. Everytime I hear it, I think of mom :(

"I only want you for Christmas" - Alan Jackson.

Has that special meaning for me and my wife because we were supposed to get married on Christmas Eve of 1998, and it didn't happen because her Ex pulled some last minute mafia string pulling with a Judge to delay signing of Divorce papers purely for spite.

We didn't actually find out until the day before.

I love O Holy Night and I like to play it on my acoustic guitar. The guys were making fun of me playing Christmas songs the other night at practice. I was singing We Three Kings of Orient Are... Tried to smoke a rubber cigar. But it was loaded and then it exploded and we never got too far. :)

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

Bridge:
I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Thanks Duckie for the lyrics. It's fairly new Chad - I know it was out last year.

Eric - Mary Did You Know is beautiful! :D

Mine has to be O Sanctissima; if you have ever seen the "Bells of St. Mary's" with Ingrid Bergman and Bing Crosby, or have been a Roman Catholic prior to 1963, you'd recognize it immediately.

This song doesn't "get me" but I love it and it's Christmasy/wintery - "Baby it's Cold Outside" by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Jordan
