Anyone Have a Bona Fide Hangover Cure?

#1 Postby JenBayles » Thu Dec 02, 2004 8:38 am

After hearing all that lovely music last night, I am now seriously paying the Piper. I NEVER drink on a work night but a friend was in need of some wining & dining and..... well...... I am now destroyed. But by God, I'm at work!

Re-hydration! Drink loads of gatorade, pop some extra strength Tylenol and do as little as possible... Hide behind the copy machine for the rest of the day ;)

Been there, done that, years ago....try having a hangover with little kids around!!! Yes that only happened once or twice when my kids were little - Mommy, if you're awake, why are your eyes closed....Mommy, why are having Pepsi for your breakfast? LOL I can't even remember when my last one was, 10 years ago? I only have a few beers with Pepsi's and/or water every other drink. Or sip a beer, no one knows you're not really drinking it (when out with friends).

What works well with me are:

Motrin or Excedrin
Caffeine - preferably Pepsi
Pretzels
Saltines
Toast
A good lunch and dinner (turkey sub, lots of bread!)

Hope you feel better.......

Funny, but my tips can fall under the headaches thread too.

That hair of the dog that bit ya advice....I would never try that! Another drink that got me in this condition, is the last thing in the world I want!!! I know people swear by it, but not me.

My worst hangover ever was after a night of beers, followed by a shot of something (peer pressure on my bachelorette night). The next day I had to travel 2 hours north to a business function with Jim....it was black tie and all that. And I felt so sick, I made him drive thru a McDonald's for a Coke and fries. Then they were passing around trays of champagne at this function.....wow, that was the doozy of them all. Jim kept saying - you can't do shots, why did you agree to that.....LOL Sure I can laugh now... And oh, I was closing out my apartment, so I was sleeping in a sleeping bag then...didn't even have furniture at this point, since our wedding was just a few days away and I was going to stay with my mom. Thank goodness I still had my apt. b/c my mom would have flipped and thought I was coming down with the flu or something (she's never had a hangover!).

<hands shaking; eyes crossing> OK, trying to swill the H20. Can't quite face anything carbonated yet and food is absolutely out of the question. Lord have mercy! I am nothing more than a toxic waste dump.

Mary - love the bit about being hungover with the kids.

Jen......you'll be feeling better by dinner time I suspect. Just in time to go home huh?

Here's another funny story for you. I worked at doctor's office for 10 years. 1-7 I was happily married, or so I thought. He was a cheater, but that's another story. We separated and I was divorced by year 8 and turning age 30. Sowing my wild oats in other words - doing things I should have done from ages 18 to 25. I was making up for lost time. I used to be bright eyed, very energetic in the mornings, while my coworkers were always tired - I worked with several women in their 40s-50s (me now!). They dragged thru their days....me, I never hit the snooze, got right up at 6 every single day. Then I started partying with single friends I hooked up with......on a weekly basis I'd be dragging one day a week. My city has Parties in the Park (3 hour event with live music, happy hour prices) along the Ohio River 6 months a year, mid-week, on Wednesdays. Yes on Thursdays, I was a mess....I think I shocked everyone in my office - what has happened to our little Betty-Crocker Mary (I used to be into baking, sewing, etc. before all the partying began). Now I'm into that stuff again, but for a few years there, I felt like you do today - enough that everyone was having a good laugh, telling me all their worst hangovers stories...which makes you want to hurl at the moment....LOL I still get together with these former coworkers and we all laugh now at much I changed the last 3 years I worked there! Changed for the better I think now, but those hangover days - woweee, I was not in good shape. And one diner had open face turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes. I intentionally took orders for that diner and went out for them. Someone would see me eating this entree and laugh - oh where did you go last night Mary? LOL

I always drink a bottle of water before I go to bed to rehydrate my body. That always seems to work for me.

Bingo! Drink lots of water and take two multivitamins. It's about the same effect as a "banana bag" or "rally pack" IV as we used to call it in the ER.

The hangover is a result of the alcohol dehydrating your body, so you need to replenish fluids and vitamins and thiamine. I've only tried it once since I've only been drunk once (wouldn't even really classify it as "drunk" since I got tired so quickly and went right to bed :) - Fourth of July 2003). Nevertheless, it worked. I woke up the next morning at 7:30 and had already gone grocery shopping and done laundry when my best friend called to check on me. Couldn't believe I was already up and "alive."

While caffeine may seem like a good idea (to help keep you alert) it does nothing but dry your system out further. A cup of coffee or a pop won't hurt, but like everyone else has said, drink as much water as possible. FORCE FLUIDS as my mom would say! Also, if you have time after lunch, lay your head down for about 20 minutes. A good old-fashioned nap usually helps. Bread and/or greasy foods will probably help ease your stomach, just don't eat a lot of something that requires too much digestion (like veggies).

Normally I do too. However, I was so far beyond irresponsible it never even crossed my mind. By the time the bed spins started it was all over.

Hey Shawn - this reminds me of early ER days....when TV character and loveable bad-boy doc Doug Ross played by George Clooney, would come staggering into the ER, asking to sober up in a room, so he could work his shift in a few hours.

Guess it does work!

Mary, that's too darn funny! Y'all keep the drunk stories coming- misery loves company.

I am most thankful to have an understanding boss. He's just shaking his head and laughing. Like I said, I NEVER pull this kind of a stunt! I'm embarrassed to call myself a biker.....

My grandmother drinks a glass of milk and takes an ibprufin before she goes to bed (after a night of drinking) and she NEVER gets a hangover...

But since thats too late.. my mom always drank some Ginger Ale or Sprite..

I dont drink enough to get hungover...
