Blue Angel Crashes

#1 Postby Opal storm » Thu Dec 02, 2004 5:51 pm

Investigators are probing waters off Perdido Key this morning... after a Blue Angels Hornet went down yesterday afternoon during a training mission.
The pilot for the famous Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron is said to be doing
well and is now out of the hospital.Coast Guard crews are on the scene trying to recover
as much of the aircraft as possible...
The jet was one of two flying in a formation similar to something you may see at an air show.
Something went wrong around 2:45 yesterday afternoon and the pilot was forced to eject.
The aircraft went down about ten miles away from the Blue Angels' Base at NAS Pensacola, near Perdido Key.... and there are signs of possible mechanical problems...
The 225 foot Coast Guard Cutter "Cypress", is now picking up floating debris from the wreckage... and is securing a perimeter around the crash site.
Officials from the Naval Safety Center in Norfolk, Virginia are also heading to the crash site... to figure out the best methods to recover the aircraft... and to determine what led to the crash.
A Blue Angel Jet costs about 30 million dollars and the Navy wants to salvage all that it can...
Officials have not released the pilot's name...
But we do know he was conscious and alert when he was rescued from the water shortly after the crash....
Navy rescue crews then transported him to Naval Hospital Pensacola via helicopter, and as we reported, he has since been released from the hospital.
