there's a surprise - - follow the money$$$$. Iraq was also giving away oil to Syria for about $9 bucks a barrel - when barrel prices are normally what, 6 or 7 times higher?... Of course, the sadist Uday and Zeus knows who else are on some nice Mediterranean beach in Syria with their stash of goodies plundered out of their former country. This is a dollar game now. I said a few weeks ago that we need to watch what will happen AFTER the war; who will be appointed to rebuild, who will be 'brought into the fold', who will make the decisions. Well the time is now and it's not pretty. Iraqis are blaming us for screwing their businesses....right....and not getting infrastructure in order. You know this is getting sort of old...SSDD. Change the players, the finger-pointing continues. Blame someone else....Leave the destitute countrymen in shambles and pick up/continue on as before in another country. Ah, what a Tax Day...Maybe we could sic the IRS on the old regime's keesters....

Iraq was supplying oil basically gratis..plus minimal costs for delivery..about 7-9 dollars per Bbl.Conversly,as you mentioned the prices on with trading markets such as the US,etc.were higher..28-34 dollars Bbl if OPEC reports properly,which oftentimes,they bury costs,etc and prices become relavent to the Buyer...which is passed on at the Pump.
As for it being a Dollar game..yes and no.There is a Political Movement in Arab/Moslim Countries to switch currency from the US Dollar,(which is very vulnerable) to the Euro..largely controlled by the French and Germans.This is where it gets interesting.Very interesting.
On another interesting note,while in Mexico yesterday..the Peso(MX) was at a whopping 10.48cents/=Inflation continues there.For years it was hovering in the 8 cent range..and finally all but collapsed just a few pro PRI, Pre Vinny Fox era.We need to repair the relationships forged in early 2001 and take advantage of the Price Locked Oil Options,as Mexico is so near and dear in location and the fact that she is non-OPEC.
Furthermore,the Iraqi business scape was controlled and held largely in the larger Cities by Saddam's Ba'ath Party.Of course they are insolvant!And yes,we removed the Ba'ath regime..so yes Biz is screwed in the short term.This is where we could make a foothold with American Pesos in the region,before the Euro takes'expands the position,esp with the UN and Euro Nations clamouring for a piece of the pie,which they have to a some extent.
You mentioned your affinity for Airbus.The same Airbus Industrie du France that boasts an 83%+ marketshare in the Arab Air Routes and Exec Jets.Funded by the Euro.Also,the Av Jet-A is 70%+ refined and delivered by France Fina Petrol.Again,there are huge economic ties to France & the Euro in the Middle East Region.

"I love the smell of Jet-A in the morning!" which I grew accustomed to working at the end of the banjo in the Flight Ops tower in CLE. Runway checks from end-to-end twice a shift, cleared by on-site Air Traffic Control from each taxiway before hopping on the Big Dogs and running flat out pedal to the floor between landings/takeoffs. Any shards of debris were scooped up into the vehicle as 'stuff' would fall off or be blown onto the runways every day. Birds were the biggest hassle though due to proximity to the Lake (Erie) and flocks used to love to fly in and sit on the big grassy sprawls between 'ways. We didn't like it when birds would get sucked into engines...neither did the pilots or the passengers :bo We had a deer infestation too...they'd just meander out among the craft entering or egressing, fairly mindless of the 280+mph death tubes hurling down the lanes towards them...ya had to be there. We had a great 360 degree view from up top the tower with the darkened anti-glare glass on all sides, but it was hell during severe thunderstorms. We weren't supposed to touch any metal - he,he - right...Sometimes the wind would blow so hard - you know those squall lines in the Midwest...that the tower would sway from side to side. Always a fun ride! ...Oh we were talking about oil, were we not.... Mexico...Mexico...I've heard of them...
