December 7th, 1941 was to my parents what 9-11 has become to me and my children.......both are tragic days in U.S. history that are burned into our collective memories.

Here's a research project for someone:
I suspect that there are a lot of parallels between the attitude of our nation just before 12-7 and 9-11. I believe that there was a strong current of pacifism and non-involvement in the European war at that time. Both events woke us up and drew us into wars.
Anyone?

I think that America was beginning to wake up from its slumber, and the bombing just jumped the war forward. Roosevelt had been engaging the axis powers for some time. We were not neutral. He was making his case to the nation. Pearl Harbor just p1ssed everyone off... for good reason.
9/11 people had clues we were at war. Embassy Bombings, USS Cole, and so on. We thought we were safe from the enemy and it could be dealt with in a police-type manner.
I would say there is a surface parallel.

I can only imagine the horror of watching the planes swarm in and begin picking off ships in the harbor one at a time. Sitting ducks for sure.
I'm glad I live at a time when that is unlikely to happen again. On the other hand...nukes coming in under the cloak of darkness or passenger planes hitting buildings in broad daylight are still very real possibilities.
Hawaii seemed a zillion miles away from the U.S. mainland until that happened on Dec 7th. Then the distance grew much shorter and the connection much stronger.
Prayers of gratitude for those who gave their lives trying to beat back a swarm of bees that day.
