Have you felt earthquakes in your lifetime?

I haved felt in mt lifetime minor and some moderate ones the latest one this afternoon as a 5.1 quake with epicenter near the Virgin Islands shock the region.

I was in a chair looking at the TV this afternoon when the chair began to move pretty good.But nothing bad occured in Puerto Rico.This has been the most strongest quake that I haved felt ever. Haved any of you in your lifetime had experienced these movements?

I haven't. We are not in an active area. Although I have felt vibrations in the building where I work. It makes me wonder sometimes.

Puerto Rico is located in an active region for the tremors and more stronger earthquakes to occur many times.The last big quake to jolt Puerto Rico was in 1918 when a 7.0 quake with epicenter in western PR shock the island with hundreds of deaths the result.

One time while living in Cincinnati...(this happened in either the late seventies or early eighties) there was a very minor tremor.

In November of last year when I was living in Roanoke Rapids, NC...I was at work but didn't feel a thing...BUT...my Mom was at home and she felt it...said there were dishes rattling in the cupboards...from a minor quake which originated in VA.

Even living as close as I do to the New Madrid fault line
in West Tennessee, I can honestly say that I have never
felt the slightest tremor. Then, again, I can't say that I'd
really want to! Luis, I can only imagine that, for a few
seconds there, you were probably wide-eyed and almost
holding your breath!

No. I slept through the "big one" here in the Spring of 2003. It was a 4.9 and struck about 100 miles north of here about 4am in the morning. It apparently was felt here but wasn't that bad. It did knock some things off shelves north of here and crack a few chimmeys.

I can only recall feeling one small (magnitude 3.5-3.7) earthquake in my life.....back in December 1982. I was working night security at a restaurant in north Atlanta, and felt the tremors...but didn't immediately realize it was a quake (until hearing the news the next day; it occurred at 2:30 a.m.).

I don't want to experience anything stronger than that one....because Becky (sis) experienced a much stronger quake in Portland, Oregon several yrs ago (the Tacoma-Olympia 6.7), and it knocked her off her feet. She said it was absolutely terrifying....even more frightening than the tornado we both experienced in 1974.

I use to live in the LA area in the late 80's. I was awakened one night by my bed shaking. I initially thought one of my kids was jumping on the bed until I came to and noticed everything else in the room was rocking and rolling. Seems a 5.0 had occured near the Rose Bowl. Could not get back to sleep that night......MGC

On a bi weekly bases when stationed in NAVSTA Adak, Alaska 1977! 2 were strong enough to produce tidal waves!

Once in New Jersey of all places! I think it may have been back in 1993 or so. The quake (VERY MINOR) was centered (I believe) in Cherry Hill, NJ. I was at work in Mt. Laurel, about 5 miles away to the east. I was standing in an office by a desk facing the windows that looked out onto the industrial park's main road. All of a sudden we all felt a rumble - I felt it going under my feet. I looked up and didn't see any trucks going by the building. Everyone was looking at each other and wondering what the heck that was! On the way home on the news I heard that there was a minor earthquake! Freaked me out!!

Felt a couple of weak ones here in Indiana, and one in Kyoto, Japan over the summer - nothing major though.

Felt many tremors in the Charleston, SC area .. since the Middleton Fault (responsible for the 7-ish quake (or Intensity X on the Modified Mercalli Scale) on August 31st, 1886 ... the strongest one was on August 21st, 1992 (easy to remember, b/c it occurred at 12:32 PM, 3 days before Andrew struck South Florida) ... which was preliminarily set at 4.1, upgraded to 4.4, in which the epicenter was only about 2 miles NE of here, about 6 km deep ...

things were rocking and rolling for about 15 seconds ....

I've felt a couple. The most recent was this past summer in Omaha. (The epicenter was in extreme SW Iowa.) I felt another one in the winter of 2003 while I was living in Germany. The epicenter was located in northern Switzerland.

Back in the early 80s, summer time, I felt one but didn't realize what it was. We were riding in my first husband's brother's hot rod car - forget the make now....Trans Am? No A/C and muffler was about to fall off. We honestly thought the engine had a surge or something. We all said what was that? Later we came to find out we had a minor 3.something earthquake in the Ohio Valley region. And I can't even say I was standing on ground when I felt it.

That's my one and only earthquake experience. We've had some minor ones in this region, since we're close to the Madrid Fault, but I've never actually felt them. Towns nearby have.
