Colder temps coming to Gulf Coast

#1 Postby PTrackerLA » Wed Dec 08, 2004 6:10 pm

Looks like we'll finally see a dramatic temp change starting this weekend but next week it could become very cold. Just how cold remains to be seen. Check out this NWS discussions:

Lake Charles:
RAIN SHOULD BE OUT OF SE TX BY SUNRISE AND ACADIANA BY VERY EARLY
AFTERNOON. THEN LOOKING AT SEVERAL DAYS OF DRY WEATHER. UPPER TROF
DEEPENS OVER THE ERN HALF OF THE U.S. AND WE FINALLY COME UNDER
SOME GOOD NWLY FLOW ALOFT THRU THE WEEKEND. TEMPS BEHIND THE SFC TROF
WILL STILL BE WARM TOMORROW BUT AS THE UPPER TROF DEEPENS AND
THICKNESSES LOWER...COOLER WEATHER WILL BE IN STORE FRIDAY AND
SATURDAY. QUICK WARMUP FORECAST FOR SUNDAY BEFORE ANOTHER FRONT COMES
THROUGH LATE SUNDAY. NOT LOOKING FOR TOO MUCH IN THE WAY OF LOW-LEVEL
MOISTURE WITH THE SYSTEM SO LEAVING POPS OUT OF THE FORECAST. THIS
LOOKS TO BE THE STRONGEST FRONT OF THE SEASON SO FAR SUPPORTED BY A
1044 HIGH (ACCORDING TO THE GFS).

New Orleans:

THE MAIN SURGE WITH THE UPPER TROUGH SHOULD NOT BEGIN TO IMPACT MUCH
OF THE REGION UNTIL FRIDAY BEHIND A COLD FRONT WHICH SHOULD SWEEP
THROUGH THURSDAY AIDING WITH THE EXPECTED CLEARING TREND. AS THE
UPPER TROUGH EXPANDS INTO THE SOUTHEAST STATES...SIGNIFICANTLY
COOLER AIR SHOULD BEGIN TO FILTER INTO THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY ALONG
THE BACKSIDE OF THE TROUGH PROVIDING FOR SOME LATE FALL/EARLY WINTER
LIKE TEMPERATURES BEGINNING EARLY SATURDAY AND CONTINUING INTO THE
NEW WORK WEEK. DRY AND COOL WEATHER THEN LOOKS TO PREVAIL AS THE
DEEP UPPER TROUGH CLEARS THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD ALLOWING ZONAL FLOW
TO BECOME BRIEFLY ESTABLISHED ACROSS THE REGION AHEAD OF ANOTHER
REINFORCING SURGE OF COOLER AIR ON MONDAY. THIS IS ALSO GOING TO
ALLOW STRONG HIGH PRESSURE TO BECOME ENTRENCHED ACROSS MUCH OF THE
EASTERN STATES NEXT WEEK.

Not sure how cold it will get this far out but it looks like our first good freeze will be in the cards for next week. We'll also get a good chance to dry out.

Bring it on!! Anyone think all this precipitation we've been getting will be around when it gets really cold?

I have my doubts, but I'm still hoping!! 8-)

8-) Well, looks like we will finally get that cold air. NWS locally says low 30's to upper 20's for our area. Accuweather says for Tuesday a low of 22. Brrrr. Thats going from cool and not even a frost to bone chilling. WOW! What a messed up year it has been. :double:

I did notice that Accuweather is jumping on the bandwagon, somewhat, they have us going to 29 for a low on Tuesday night!

Accuweather is now showing 24 for the low on Wednesday morning! NWS also mentions how cold the models have trended. We're going from not even a frost to a HARD FREEZE!

DISCUSSION...W/ RETURN FLOW SPREADING ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF THE
FCST AREA TODAY SHOULD SEE A NICE WARMUP. CDFNT IS PROGGED TO CROSS
THE REGION TNGT. MOISTURE & PWAT LEVELS ARE PROGGED TO INCREASE TO A
LEVEL WHERE ISOLATED RW CAN'T BE RULED OUT...MAINLY ACROSS THE SERN
ZONES...BUT HAVE ELECTED TO HOLD OFF ON INTRODUCING A POP ATTM. ERN
CONUS TROF BUILDS OVER THE REGION THRU MIDWEEK WHILE 1037MB SFC HI
BUILDS OVERHEAD. LATEST GFS LONG-RANGE GUIDANCE CALLS FOR LOWS IN
LWR/MID 20S (18F AT KESF) FOR WED MRNG UNDER PERFECT RAD COOLING
CONDITIONS.
STILL A LITTLE HESITANT TO DROP TEMPS THAT FAR BUT HAVE
DROPPED THE FREEZING LINE DOWN TO ABOUT I-10 WHICH WILL WARRANT A
FREEZE WARNING FOR THE NRN 2/3 OF THE AREA. BY LATE WEEK ANOTHER S/WV
CROSSING THE NRN PLAINS IS PROGGED TO CUT OFF A LO OVER THE ROCKIES.
THE LO WILL DROP S ACROSS THE 4-CORNERS AND HELP SPREAD SOME MOISTURE
ACROSS THE WRN ZONES. MEANWHILE NEXT CDFNT IS PROGGED TO CROSS THE
AREA SAT. STILL NOT SEEING ENOUGH MOISTURE TO INTRO POPS THIS FAR
OUT.

Here's the South Region homepage for the NWS.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/

Looks like you are near Houston, so here's the site for specific to you.

Click on the map where you think your city is located, then on the next page, click on "Forecast Discussion".

looks like the Florida Panhandle can't escape the cold this time around. Local news out of Pensacola is calling for lows in the lower to mid 20's along the coast and high teens to low 20's north of interstate 10 for Tuesday night. BRING IT ON!! :D

Now looks like it'll be 15 to 18 degrees here Wednesday Morning. Maybe a little snow this weekend as well. That's iffy though. It will be bitterly cold until at least Christmas. 8-)

It would surely help if we could get some snow on the ground to the north of Louisiana. I just can't see any sustained cold until that happens.
Local New Orleans met says we will get even colder down here Christmas week.
