AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW ORLEANS/BATON ROUGE LA
145 PM CST FRI DEC 17 2004

.DISCUSSION...WEAK SHORT WAVE MOVING THRU TODAY. BOTH ETA AND AVN
SHUNT MOST OF COLD AIRMASS EAST OF CWA TONIGHT AND SATURDAY. NEXT
SHORT WAVE DROPS SOUTH SUNDAY WITH THICKNESS LINES DROPPING INTO
SOUTH MS AND LA SUNDAY MORNING AND SHIFTING EAST TO AL AND GA
MONDAY. RAPID WARMING INTO 50S AND LOWER 60S BY TUESDAY. MAIN
PROBLEM TO LOOK AT FOR TUESDAY AM WILL BE THREAT OF ADVECTION FOG
OVER COASTAL AREAS AND INLAND AS WINDS RETURN TO THE SOUTH. WATER
TEMPERATURES NEAR THE COAST AT 59 TO 60F WHICH WITH A 10 TO 15 KNOTS
BREEZE SHOULD PRODUCE VISIBILITIES BELOW 1 MILE TUESDAY AM UNTIL
NOON EXCEPT OVER THE MS RIVER AND LARGER LAKES...2 TO 3 PM.
AVN SHOWS A COLD FRONT SLIPPING IN CWA WEDNESDAY WITH STRONG STRONG
COLD ADVECTION FOR THURSDAY...CHRISTMAS EVE. BOTH AVN AND ETA MODELS
IMPLY SOME ISENTROPIC LIFT OR OVER RUNNING OF FRONTAL BOUNDARY IN
THE COASTAL WATERS FRIDAY NIGHT EARLY CHRISTMAS MORNING. WITH
TEMPERATURES DROPPING INTO THE 20 NORTH OF INTERSTATE 12...WILL
ALLOW FOR A MIX OF PRECIPITATION (LIGHT RAIN AND LIGHT SLEET) FOR A
FEW HOURS MAINLY IN SOUTHWEST MS COUNTIES AND LA COUNTIES NORTH OF
INTERSTATE 12.
IN MARINE...LOOKING FOR SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY CONDITIONS SUNDAY 19
AND AGAIN ON 23 AND 24 DEC.

You know that we don't dare mention the "S" word down here until its a done deal............ So the fact that they mention sleet this far out, means something to me.

Local mets are getting on board, they are putting it into their forecast as a possibility on Christmas eve and day.

All the forecasts I've seen so far for X-mas here in Pensacola say it's going to be wet and possibly warm.I've heard nothing about it snowing down here for Christmas,but I really hope it will! :)

I remember a few white Christmases, oh 20 or so years ago :).

I haven't watched any local weather. I don't want to get my hopes up just so they come crashing down. But the Accuweather GFS Snowfall cover map does show snow (1-3") across all of Louisiana beginning around 2am Christmas night and lasting through the day. I caught that by accident, but if anyone has the GFS snow cover link directly to the government, I'd appreciate it.
