Dangerously cold air will freeze the Plains and Midwest Christmas week. Strong high pressure will bring frigid air southward from the Arctic. The air will sink southward across the northern and central Plains Tuesday and Wednesday and then spread eastward into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes Thursday. This cold blast will be brutal, with sub-zero temperatures and strong winds. Frigid temperatures and strong winds will combine to make it feel like 20 to 40 below across parts of the Upper Midwest. The arctic surge will make for travel difficulties over parts of the nation late next week.
