Chances for snow on Christmas in the Deep South (questions)

#1 Postby Johnny » Sat Dec 18, 2004 1:49 pm

Well I just wanted to see what the seasoned mets (forecasters) we're now seeing as far as some snow for us here in the Deep South meaning, coastal Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi? I sure hope it hasn't gone out the window. Also, will this arctic air that is coming down be plenty cold to stick around for awhile? Come on snow!!!

Moisture is my main concern. I think it will be cold enough through the air column, but the moisture is looking very limited. Now with that said, the models did not really show the rain event last Thursday unitl about 36 hours out.

Not to mention the sub-tropics are a little active and that may provide a little more moisture that is not currently being included. First we have to get the cold air here and really locked it in place with re-inforecments every 1-2 days and then bring the moisture in.

It is very hard to get everything to line up just right this far south, but it has happened before and will happen again.

To be to the point, it is too early to know for sure, and way too early to discuss any accumulations.

Don't give up the ghost yet, there are still more model runs to go.

Meanwhile, NWS Tallahassee is noticing a few things in the AFD:

A COLD FRONT PASSAGE WILL BE SEEN LATE
WEDNESDAY TO THURSDAY...WITH TIMING A BIT UNSURE AT THIS TIME.
ATMOSPHERE DOES REBOUND WITH SOME SHOWERS & ISOLATED TSTMS AHEAD OF
THE COLD FRONT. LATEST GFS PUSHES FRONT WELL SE TO CENTRAL FL. IT
THEN STALLS SOUTH OF THE AREA OVERNIGHT THURSDAY...& THE GFS SHOWS
CYCLOGENESIS IN THE CENTRAL GULF. THE LOW THEN MOVES E-NE NEAR THE
FL BIG BEND...THEN EAST ON FRIDAY. SCENARIO IS QUITE UNCERTAIN AT
THIS TIME...& GRIDS ONLY REFLECT HEDGE TOWARD IT. THIS COULD SET UP
A POSSIBLE WINTRY MIX OF PRECIP OVER OUR CWFA...BUT WILL NOT JUMP ON
IT UNTIL LATER MODEL RUNS ARE SEEN.

That's what I'm worried about here in East Central Alabama. :(
