winter wx advisory for Washington/Baltimore area.

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Sat Dec 18, 2004 4:42 pm

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Baltimore and Washington DC metro areas and vicinity in effeect until 4 AM EST Monday. A winter weather advisory means winter weather in the form of snow, blowing snow, freezing rain, or very low wind chills are expected. While the term advisory is significant, severe winter weather is not anticipated.

An arctic cold front will move through the Washington/Baltimore areas later Sunday. Light snow showers will likely accompany this frontal passage with possibly a few heavier bursts. Total accumulation will likely be in the 1-2 inch range and it appears that will lean towards the lower end of those totals. However complicating the matters is the fact temperatures will drop sharply from the 40s on Sunday afternoon to the teens Sunday night. This combined with wet roads will likely cause very slippery travel and walking conditions Sunday night into Monday morning. The same can apply to coastal areas such as Atlantic City, Ocean City, and Virginia Beach where a coating of snow and strong winds will bring down temperatures and wind chill readings for Sunday night and Monday morning.

It appears the coastal storm will develop and move away from the Mid Atlantic coast before having much impact. However gale force winds with gusts over 50 mph on the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay and falling temps will likely result in dangerous wind chills Sunday night and Monday.. The next concern will be the possibility for a wind chill advisory Sunday night and Monday morning, especially from Baltimore and Washington north and west into the colder suburbs. Sunday night and Monday morning will features temps in the teens with strong northwest winds of 20-30 mph with higher gusts. This will result in wind chills of near zero to possibly 10 below zero in the colder suburbs.

The bottom line, get ready for the first winter weather event of the season for Washington and Baltimore and possibly up to Philadelphia as well. Take it easy and play it safe. Meanwhile areas north and east up to New England could get a bit more of a pounding from winter weather conditions Monday morning with a moderate snowfall accumulation possible. Areas included in this threat are Boston, Providence, and the Cape Cod area where a 3-5 inch snowfall with local amounts up to 6" are possible Monday morning. Cold temps and strong winds will also likely result in single digit or sub zero wind chills into New England on Monday also.

advisories and snow projections for mid atlantic

#2 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Sat Dec 18, 2004 7:20 pm

http://community.webshots.com/photo/233 ... 1253nfKjAm shows the latest advisories as of 4 PM EST on 12-18-04. This is subject to change later tonight or Sunday as new advisories could be issued further north and east.

http://community.webshots.com/photo/233 ... 3770coBuBf shows the projected snow totals, which I got at 1-2" for Baltimore and Washington DC, more likely an inch as opposed to 2 inches. Areas further north and east could see a bit more than that, but no more than 3 inches in the major metros and even that will be in very isolated spots potentially.

The heaviest amounts maybe further west where lake effect and also upslope will become a factor in the mountains of western Maryland, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. Some places could see 5 inches or more in those areas.

Will monitor this one since this the first accumulating snow of the season. The bigger problem from this winter weather event for the major metros maybe wet roads freezing later Sunday evening as temperatures sharply fall well below freezing with wind chills at or below zero.

We'll likely see a passing flurry if that Sunday night but that COLD is gonna be the BIG story Sunday night/Monday! Highs Monday only in the 20s with N winds 20 to 30 with some gusts mixing down over 40 mph. WOW what a COLD day that will be for this time of year!!!

BRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
