Snow in Eastern NC - Greenville

#1 Postby NC George » Mon Dec 20, 2004 5:17 am

Began at around 11:00 pm while I was at work. Started out with small flakes, strong wind as well, so it mostly went sideways for awhile and didn't stick. Then all of a sudden around 12:30 the temp dropped and the wind dropped off a bit and much larger flakes started falling and it started sticking, first to the ground, then on the roads. By the time we left at 2:30 the roads were covered by about 1" of snow, and the ground with 2-3". The bridges did in fact freeze before the rest of the road surface.

While driving home (15 miles out of the city, where it is slightly cooler than in the city) conditions went from bad to worse: First even though I was going 45 mph the snow still appeared to be going sideways across the windshield rather than towards it as I am accustomed to. Wind was strong enough to push car sideways on snow while driving. I slowed down, and then I encountered white out conditions - I couldn't see anything but thick snow blowing sideways - no road, no nothing. Fortunately I was almost home by then and I know the road like the back of my hand, so I crept home at a very slow speed. Also the snow was thin enough that you could see the mid-road reflectors (soon to be scraped off for this winter by the plows that were behind my car.)

Started around...oh...1230...and began sticking around 1250 or so. nice little bit for the kids to play with this morning. hopefully we can get some more from the christmas storm! (although local NWS is just saying cloudy with temps in the 50's..blah)
