No wind now in SW Fla.

#1 Postby TheShrimper » Mon Dec 20, 2004 7:06 pm

I am a little concerned even on the coast. The wind was forcasted to blow enough to eliminate a frost scenario. Winds are calm here on Pine Island, and the retail nurseries are scurrying to turn over the containerized plants and cover them. Haven't had a chance to watch local news, is it suppose to get colder than thought? This am, temps were to remain above 40 west of I-75. and the same prognosis was offered at the noon broadcast. What the hell is going on? I will watch the next few hours for temp. drops now that the sun has set.

Yea same here, TWC forecasting 48 tonight but winds are died down and it was already 50 in West Palm(usually 5 degrees warmer than here) before 6. Im thinking the coldest night of the season if the temps keep dropping.

Temps at all sites recording in SW Fla. at 7:00 pm are pretty consistant....From 46F at North Ft. Myers to 48F close to the coast in Naples. One would think it will drop at the minimum, another 10 degrees by shortly after sunrise.

The winds have laid down here in Lakeland (Central FL) also.

The 6 pm weather report was indicating that the lows may actually be higher over night than expected due to possibility of a NW wind picking up (coming in across the warmer Atlantic).

However, I think I may go with some local knowledge.....A well-known strawberry farm in Plant City has believes that if the temp there at 5 pm is 50 degrees or lower, then they know it will be a freeze in the a.m. They recorded 49 degrees at 5 pm so they will be turning on the overhead irrigation to protect the strawberry crop.

The cold sure does sweeten the strawberries and oranges. However, I'm bringing my tropicals indoors tonite!
