I'll be leaving Wednesday or Thursday for my Christmas trip to Roanoke Virginia. I'll will go straight down I 79 thru West Virginia and veer off onto 19 and some minor county roads and then hit I 64. My question - Should I leave early Wednesday morning to avoid any of the threatening storm or do you think it will be safe to leave on Thursday???
Thanks and Merry Christmas
Karan

I would leave extremely early on Wednesday if I were you. Too dangerous to travel anywhere on Thursday.
Also, if I were you. I would stay 79 all the way down to Charleston, WV. Once there you can jump on I-64 east directly off of 79 to I-81 southbound to Roanoke. I wouldn't take chances with them secondaries.

Wednesday will be quite warm in PA, VA and WV, although if you leave very early and the precip has started (not likely at all), it may be frozen in higher elevations. I would not wait until Thursday however, as the front will have moved through and there will likely be snow squalls and showers throughout the Appalachians.

Ditto on the early advice. Also, pack some sandwiches, hot coffee, etc. Throw in emergency supplies listed somewhere I'm sure here at S2K or on a page at TWC. Blankets, bottled water, you just never know if you'll be stranded.
I think we take it for granted we don't have to travel over the holidays - both our families live in town. Let's just say I won't be grumbling b/c we have to drive 45 minutes to get to a sister's house anymore!
Good luck Karan and I hope your drive is safe and uneventful.
