North TX Snow/sleet

Snow advisory issued for Dallas and Fort Worth SSW to north of Waco.

Wet bulbing has allowed temps to fall near freezing over the metro areas with snow and sleet being reported at several ob stations. Bright banding on the KFWD NEXRAD is indicating areas of heavy sleet and snow burst. Quick accumulations of .5 -1.0 inches are possible within the bright banding areas.

General accumulations of 1-2 inches are possible within the advisory area from north of Waco to Dallas with 2-3 inches along the Red River. The ground is warm so the snow will be metling on the roadways until the temp reaches the freezing mark. Even though the forecast is for accumulation much of this will melt with the warm ground temps.

Snow across W TX (2-4 in) and over NC TX will result in less air mass modificatio of the arctic high as it slides south. Little hope of seeing above freezing again until Sunday from Midland to Lubbock and east to Fort Worth.

Jeff, as I write this there is a band of rain mixed with sleet on the western fringes of Austin. Temps have dropped 5-7 degrees in the last several hours and we are at 36 here in the city.

I was wondering it it was frozen given the bright banding. No obs have reported anything from this band to my knowledge.

The snow and ice to the north is creating much colder conditions than forecast. As that band pushes across you could easily drop to freezing with evaporative processes and wet bulbing. Could see some very minor accumulations.

Snow looks possible even in C TX Thursday and Friday depending on the track of the upper air disturbance/ low over Old Mexico

Today the frozen precip. line will proabably run along and north of an Austin to College Station line.

The event for Friday is still in the air, but areas from south of San Antonio to Brownsville then to Matagorda Bay stand the best chance of seeing precip as it stands right now.

Still uncertain about moisture and any accumulation amounts. Cold air should be in place with a strong 1040mb arctic high near the Red River with little modification over the snow pack of NC TX.

Nothing much downtown here but I understand in the northern parts of the city there were some rain/sleet reports in the last 30 mins. Doubt any officials obs from Mabry or Bergstrom will show anything though.

Indeed it is colder here at this point than forecasted.

Little bit of accumulation on grassy areas. Not on concrete. It's tapering off now.

I know a guy that lives in Rising Star, Texas who has had up to 4 inches of accumulating snow. Check this thread out. A few people have taken pictures from other towns and the guy from Rising Star will post his in about an hour.

Yeah, it hasn't really stopped since it started this morning. Here on the east side of Dallas, we've picked up about an inch. Just enough to make a snowboy. It's still snowing lightly outside, but more is on the way.

It may not snow on Christmas, but the temperatures may be cold enough to keep whatever is on the grass and roofs from melting off until Christmas day! I am thankful for the almost white Christmas this year. I am sitting in my cube at a major financial company in Westlake texas. They have these huge windows overlooking the prairie and the snow is coming down pretty steadilly and is moderate in intensity. The trees are coated and the grass above the ground is. Looks like the ground itself is finally starting to support some acccumulation on its own too. The 70 degree temps yesterday really warmed the ground up, unfortunately .
