Brent - local news just said 90 minute delays!!! Makes ya wonder what the real story is. I'm inclined to believe the 4 hour delay after looking at our street, which has been plowed and salted many times today. You wouldn't know it to look at it.

Major Traffic Problems On Interstates

Backups For Miles In Both Directions From Cut In Hill

POSTED: 5:46 am EST December 22, 2004
UPDATED: 10:42 pm EST December 22, 2004

CINCINNATI -- Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions from the cut in the hill on I-75/71 in Northern Kentucky as a continuing major snowstorm played havoc with motorists tonight.

At 10 p.m., northbound traffic was backed up south past Buttermilk Pike, and southbound traffic was backed up into Ohio past the Lytle Tunnel on I-71 and up to Mitchell Avenue on I-75.

There were three problems in the area:

· An accident between a semi and a car at 12th Street closed all but one northbound lane.

· Several tractor-trailers became stuck on the northbound lanes near Buttermilk Pike.

· Icy conditions on the cut in the hill forced officials to shut down the highway there during evening rush hour so it could be retreated. A few vehicles at a time were being allowed to continue southbound up the hill so they don't get create a logjam on the hill.

More problems tonight:

· A jackknifed tractor-trailer blocked northbound I-471 just south of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge.

· Another jackknifed trailer blocked the I-275 ramp to I-75 in Erlanger.

· I-71 traffic at Fields Ertel Road was at a standstill, News 5's Jesse Jones reported.

· I-75 traffic in Butler County was moving about 20 mph, News 5

Sleet moved into some areas of the Tristate tonight, mainly east of I-71, but it will turn back into snow overnight and continue into Thursday afternoon.

Snow accumulations of 6-8 inches were reported throughout Hamilton County today, with higher totals to the north and west and up to 15 inches in southeastern Indiana.

Totals will go much higher overnight when the heaviest snowfall is expected.

The storm created a winter wonderland for kids who got an early start to Christmas vacation and a nightmare for drivers three days before Christmas.

Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken said road crews were fighting a losing battle and implored people to stay off the streets.

"The snow is coming down so quickly and obviously we haven't been able to keep up with it," Luken said at an afternoon news conference. "We don't expect much relief from the situation in the next 24 hours."

City crews won't be able to get to side streets until Thursday, News 5's Jesse Jones reported. Even main roads became slippery and slushy under the heavier snowfall. Dozens of vehicles slid off roads.

To make matters worse, the heavy snowfall made it hard for drivers to see. Snow was falling at a rate of 3 inches per hour at different times and different areas.

Cincinnati and dozens of communities declared snow emergencies. See the list.

At the airport, many flights were canceled or delayed.

Metro reported delays in the bus schedule. Riders can call the Detour Hotline at 632-7538.

At least two malls, Northgate and Cincinnati Malls, shut down two hours early, News 5's Sheree Paolello reported. They hoped to open at 8 a.m. Thursday. Few customers braved the storm Wednesday, and mall operators struggled to keep parking lots clear.

All this was just the beginning of Mother Nature's 1-2 punch, News 5 Chief Meterologist Jim O'Brien reported. The heaviest snow will arrive after midnight with whiteout conditions and even "thunder snow" possible.

That's happens when there's so much lift in the atmosphere that it creates lightning flashes and very intense periods of snow, O'Brien said.

Here are new total projections for the end of the storm Thursday afternoon:

· 10-16 inches north and west of the Norwood Lateral;

· 5-9 inches south and east of the Lateral.

· 2-5 inches in the southeasternmost areas of the Tri-state.

Dayton and areas north of the Tri-state are looking at 18-24 inches.

The snow started near dawn west and north of the city, and those areas have the greatest accumulations.

Franklin County, Ind., reports 10 inches, with 15 inches north of Connersville.

There were reports of 8 inches in Middletown, Colerain Township and Cleves and 6 inches downtown and in Covington and Lebanon.

The snow didn't reach Milford, Batavia and points east until mid-afternoon as the storm moved slowly across the Tri-state, but they got some heavy snow and have a couple of inches on the ground.

Some bank robbers tried to take advantage of the situation, hitting two banks, News 5's Brian Hamrick reported from Boone County. Police were following tracks in the snow.

As usual, Tri-staters were using two styles of driving in the snow: very fast or very slow, Jones reported from Fields-Ertel Road in Warren County.

No major traffic problems were reported this morning. On the west side, police did close the Warsaw Avenue and Grand Avenue hills for a time until road crews could treat them and make them safe again.

Cincinnati is on an emergency accident plan. That means drivers in minor accidents should exchange phone numbers, license numbers and insurance information. Don't call police unless there is an injury or your car is undriveable.

News 5 will continue to monitor traffic and flights throughout the storm.

For major accident reports, go to Artimis.org.

Luken said budget problems wouldn't curtail the city's street clearing efforts. The city started pre-treating roads at 7 p.m. Tuesday night and had used 1,000 tons by 3 p.m. Wednesday.

"I expect we'll go 10 times that by the time we're done," Luken said.

The city has 24,000 tons of salt and more is on order.

Luken said 80 crews are on the job, treating and plowing streets the city's 2,800 miles of roads in 12-hour shifts.

Primary streets, bridges and overpasses are being treated first, then hilly streets.

City officials asked drivers to park off the streets and keep 50-100 feet from road crews at work.

You can report a bad road by calling 591-SNOW (591-7669).

In Hamilton County, 59 trucks were loaded up with plows, chains and salt and headed out when the snow started. They were assigned to cover 1,500 miles of county roads.

In Butler County, streets were pre-treated with brime.

In Warren County, trucks were ready for the first snow with 18 drivers on standby.

Northern Kentucky was prepared, too.

"(For) Campbell, Boone and Kenton (counties), we have 32 trucks ready," said Nancy Wood.

The snow guarantees a white Christmas for the Tri-state because temperatures are going to stay below freezing the rest of the week, falling to minus-10° on Christmas morning.

Christmas Day looks dry, partly cloudy and cold with a high of 13°

As fun as this has been for me today, I'm starting to hate cold weather. The older I get (and I'm only 24), the more I can't stand it. Part of it has to do with my really dry skin, which gets eaten up in the winters around here.

Anyway, good luck getting him "home for the holidays". I saw on the news tonight that many flights were cancelled today, but I'm sort of suprised that outgoing flights are tomorrow as well. An uncle is supposed to be flying in from San Francisco, so I hope he makes it.

If anyone is expecting a package from UPS by Christmas (or anytime soon) it may likely be delayed since the Louisville International Airport serves as the headquarters for them. Last year at this time the skies were filled with what seemed like hundreds of UPS jets - it was quite eerie to see so many planes! This year, just giant snowflakes.

I know what you mean Purdue.......Indiana winters are difficult on the body...."Ice" and I didn't get along too well... hehehe. I sure don't miss those dreary bone-chilling January days....sooooo bleak. Flights out of Louisville to my knowledge haven't been cancelled for tomorrow......there just wasn't anything available for my son due to the cancellations/holidays......he's on standby, but I doubt he gets on a plane. Anyways....have enjoyed your posts today (I enjoy hearing about all the snow as long as I don't have to be in it) Hope your Uncle has a good trip !

8:37 p.m. CVG airport update - all Delta flights cancelled until 11 a.m. Comair running but only one runway open at this time.

Level 3 Emergency in Cincinnati and Hamilton County (county city of Cincy is in, and surrounding suburbs). Many counties all around Cincy are under Level 3 Emergencies. Only essential, emergency type vehicles are allowed on roadways at this time. If a motorist does decide to travel and has an accident, they will be ticketed for being on the road. And in the city of Cincinnati, you will be arrested! That's according to local news stations.

We had ice fall all night long here on the eastern side of Cincy. Power outages are sporadic on this side of town and in eastern communities (where mainly 2-3 inches of ice fell last night, not much snow). In fact we lost power for a few hours in the middle of the night. Thankfully by 7 a.m., it was back on.

Many, many businesses/daycares/doctor's offices/hospital rehab facilities, all closed today. Continuous scrolls across the morning news. In fact, several local am newscasts preempted shows such as Good Morning America! I'd have to say this storm might set a record for suspended regular programming. Many stations started newscasts yesterday at 4, not 5. Then had 'specials' starting during primetime viewing - 9 or 10, right thru the 11 regular timeslot. I don't see how anyone in this area wouldn't be up on the storm and it's impact, after all local stations did a superb job alerting viewers.

My father-in-law flies into CVG at noon today from Florida. Good thing we're not the family picking him up! I would imagine his flight will be delayed.

If I have more info to pass along I will. Basically, SW Ohio, SE Indiana and N Kentucky is shutdown. Motorists are shown trying to maneuver snow and ice covered streets but it's a very slow-go and they are being told to stay home.

My wife, kids, brother & sister in-law are 30 miles East Of the Indiana/Ohio Border STUCK & NOT MOVING On Interstate 70!! They have been there since about 11PM Last Night! Please Pray For them!!

Ohmigosh Michael! I'm praying for them right now. Have you heard if they're moving yet? Give us an update.

We've been in a State of Emergency since 7pm last night. There have been literally *HUNDREDS* of stranded motorists on I-64 between the IL border and Rt 231, a stretch of 50 miles. The Nat'l Guard have been rescuing people all night.

Vanderburgh county (Evansville) only has 10 snowplow trucks, which are trying to clear 600 miles of roads. Not to mention all the vehicles in the way. What a job!

My husband got up early this morning, shoveled the driveway, and drove to work. Except he didn't quite make it, and is currently trying to dig himself out of a drift somewhere in Evansville. When will he ever listen to me?!!

I measured 17" here (avg of several readings). Drifts are incredible. Wind is still blowing it every which way. I feel like I'm in New Hampshire again! Except they would have had the roads cleared and salted by 5am.

BTW, 4 thundersnow occurances!!!
One at 9:45pm, and another 3 between 10:45 - 11:00pm. I visually saw the 4 flashes of lightning ... but only actually heard 1 rumble. I read that the sound only travels about 1 mile before getting muffled out by the heavy snow and dense cold air, whereas warm wx thunder travels 4-5 miles.

A historic snow event for the OV!

Because life doesnt stop for snow up north unlike it does in alabama for a small insignificant snow flurry.

Donna - historic indeed! Hope your husband gets out of the snowdrift too. Unfortunately, that's a story I keep hearing over and over - people thinking they can get home or to work, and then get stuck.

I posted this on the PBS thread already, but we can't clear our driveway now, of whatever fell after 7 last night. We had freezing rain from about 6 until the middle of the night. Lost power for about 3 hours, but it's back on. Duh, I'm posting!!! We inherited my dad's old snowblower. It worked great on the snowfall up until 7 last night. Jim plowed right thru it, no problem. Made an attempt this morning to clear the 4 to 5 inches that fell last night and it only took off the top layer of snow - about an inch. Below is thick, thick ice. So now basically that is the top of our driveway. What a mess! Some neighbors have been out but haven't gotten very far in clearing their driveways. And now we have bitterly cold temps coming!

Oh no Mary, I don't know if you'll be able to chip thru that ice until maybe early next week! Hope you got all your shopping done for Christmas! :D

Glad you got your power back. That's something I don't take for granted anymore. Precious electricity!
