SLEETING SOUTH OF BATON ROUGE

#1 Postby CYCLONE MIKE » Fri Dec 24, 2004 1:33 pm

We have had sleet now for about 15-20 min in Gonzales just south of BTR. You can see it coming down and bouncing of the roof and accum. on our glass patio table. Pretty cool to see down here for this time of year. It is not sticking to the ground yet, it is still pretty warm

Ah sweet memories of Gonzales from 1969!!! New Oreleans Pop Festival at the speedway there!!! Don't even know if that venue still exists.

Mike I'm not far from you, in Reserve, and we've had the same thing this AM.

Hey vbhoustex, Can you help me out with a question? The latest IR GOM sat loop show what almost looks like a dry line of sorts moving SE towards the coast from central Texas, with a good surge moving NE out the gulf. Is that going to push all of this to the east by tonight and clear things up? Your thoughts please.

As quick as it started it has already stopped. The clouds have built back in a lot thicker though. Maybe more to come??

I was looking at it and waiting to see if I saw what I thought I was seeing, and I have to say I am not a pro at all, just a somewhat versed amatuer. I've been watching that same area to our NW. It appears to be the next surge of cold air coming in which would normally clear it out. However, and I could be wrong on this, it does not appear to me that the Low has formed yet, but is starting to. The "Snow" plume we see basically stretching SW to the Mexican border is a product of a now very moist atmosphere at all levels trying to push into the dryer air to our North and apparently winning at this time or at least in a standoff. As the low takes shape to the SW it will eventually swing that dry in behind it, but not until it pulls up quite a bit of moisture ahead of it into our areas. I still expect SE TX, SW LA, and most points East to see light accumulating sleet/snow or snow starting later this afternoon or early this evening as the low develops and moves ENE closer than was expected to the coast. I do mean very light accumulations. How I would love a 4" surprise snowfall, but as moist as the atmosphere has become there is still dry air and warm ground to fight. Any pros that read this feel free to bust me on this if I am incorrect.
