I am in total SHOCK.

#1 Postby Anonymous » Fri Dec 24, 2004 10:16 pm

I spent three months down there in central Texas this past summer. I was there from June 9 to September 23. I was there to help my relatives. They have a mini ranch of sorts there in Buda, which is 20 miles SSW of Austin.

One of the things my relatives did for me since I helped 'em out so much was to take me for a trip to Mustang Island, on Padre Island, from August 20 to 23. That is not far from Corpus Christi. It was HOT down there folks, it was 98 degrees, accompanied by 78 degree dewpoints. That is extremely hot and HUMID by NE Virginian standards.

Well, I really enjoyed that Mustang Island beach, it had dunes and constant blowing sand because of 25 to 40 mph SE winds at the time I was down there. On August 22, I took a jebwalk, beginning at 530pm. I walked a total of 9.2 miles, which was the longest ever jebwalk at that time (I have since walked 10.2 miles here in NE Virginia, in October).

I am having such a hard time believing that the ultra-hot beach I jebwalked on only 4 months ago is now experiencing moderate to heavy SNOW?!!!!

Yeah, I am in SHOCK.

I hope that storm stalls out for three days and you get snow through December 27.

It is so nice that you folks get to enjoy snow! :)

You know I have a feeling, it will not be the only time you see it this winter.

With all these crazy amplified troughs and arctic air this winter, it would not surprise me that the impossible happens this winter, like South Texas getting 10 inches of snow in one storm.

Enjoy the snow!!! :) I'm praying hard for it to intensify and the storm to slow down its forward movement.

I am so glad you get to enjoy a White Christmas!!! :)

I'm also in shock....this is becoming a historic event (re: white Christmas).

There have been snowfalls along the Texas coast on rare occasions during the past, even heavy snow....such as the incredible February 1895 snowstorm which dropped an unprecidated 6" at Brownsville, 20-22" in the Houston area, 22-24" in SW Louisiana, and 8.2" in downtown New Orleans (also 11" in Montgomery, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia).

However, a significant snowfall ON Christmas is extremely rare even in southern cities much farther north. For example, there's never been a white Christmas in Atlanta, Georgia (not in 127 yrs) or Birmingham, Alabama. Even in Chattanooga, Tennessee a white Christmas is a quite rare event....to my recollection it's only occurred twice in my lifetime (since 1961).

To witness a white Christmas along the Texas coast is IMO a once-in-a-500 yr event, if not longer. It's (white Christmas) estimated as less than 1% in chance this area (metro Atlanta).

Congratulations and Merry Christmas to those enjoying the unusual Gulf coast white Christmas.....wish I was there :)
