Amen.

Michael, I hate to say it, but I have feeling this is a sign of things to come, so sitback put the popcorn in the micro and end get ready for the show. It is very rare that we have 2 8.0 + quakes in less than a month, and it is not due to wind patterns or some other easily explained weather patterns. Things are changing and are changing quickly. I believe we will have several more huge quakes and several volcanoes blowing their lid. I also, believe that weather patterns will become more extreme. I feel very badly for the people that suffered and got killed in sumatra. I just have a bad feeling things will get worse..

AS far as I've heard and read, I don't think they've even established contact with large parts of Sumatra, on the western coast closest to the epicenter. Has anyone heard differently? I wonder how many deaths yet to come.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Hundreds of people died and entire villages and towns disappeared when tidal waves hit Somalia's coastline along its central and northeastern regions, a Somali presidential spokesman said Monday.

The waves, which hit on Sunday, were triggered by the 9.0-magnitude undersea quake centered off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles) away.

Asia battles earthquake aftermath

Many do not know if missing relatives are dead or alive
Survivors and rescuers are battling the devastation left by sea surges that wiped out entire communities, killing about 23,000 people.
The death toll is still spiralling upwards and mass graves are being dug even as people hunt for the missing.

The extent of the damage is still not known in areas worst hit, including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India and Thailand.

International aid efforts have begun amid fears that disease could spread through the disaster zone.

Survivors may have little clean water or sanitation as they try to build shelters and bury the dead after Sunday's 9.0 magnitude earthquake sent huge waves from Malaysia to Africa.

DISASTER TOLL
Sri Lanka: 13,000 dead
Indonesia: 4,500 dead
India: 3,500 dead
Thailand: 866 dead
Maldives: 52 dead
Malaysia: 44 dead
Burma: 30 dead
Bangladesh: 2 dead

"This may be the worst natural disaster in recent history because it is affecting so many heavily populated coastal areas... so many vulnerable communities," UN emergency relief co-ordinator Jan Egeland told CNN.

In northern Indonesia, nearest to the epicentre of the undersea quake, the vice-president said he feared fatalities in the worst-hit province of Aceh could rise as high as 20,000.

Jusuf Kalla appealed for urgent international aid.

"It's very, very bad," he told reporters after a trip to the area. "We need help fast."

Aftershocks

The number of dead has also soared well into the thousands in Sri Lanka and India, and thousands more may have been killed on the Andaman and Nicobar islands where reports say entire communities were swept into the sea.

Packed holiday resorts in Thailand were also badly hit, and the waves killed people in Malaysia, the Maldives, Burma and Bangladesh.

Thousands are missing and many more thousands forced from their homes by the worst earthquake in 40 years that generated a wall of water speeding across the oceans.

Hundreds of fishermen are feared drowned off the coast of Somalia, officials said.

Aftershocks have also been detected, sparking warnings from Indian and Sri Lankan weather officials of further, smaller surges, also known as tsunamis.

Sri Lankan rescue workers have been combing the coastline by ship, plane and helicopter, searching for survivors and pulling the dead from the water.

About a million are now homeless.

"The scale of the tragedy is massive and Sri Lanka... has never been hit by tidal waves or earthquakes in its known history," President Chandrika Kumaratunga told the BBC.

Searches have also been continuing off southern India for those swept away from beaches or in fishing boats.

GIANT EARTHQUAKES
1960 - Chile, 9.5 magnitude
1964 - Alaska, 9.2
1957 - Alaska, 9.1
1952 - Russia, 9.0
2004 - Indonesia, 9.0

In Thailand, bodies were still being taken to makeshift morgues in the resort of Phuket.

Many are said to be clad in swimsuits, with people dragged to their deaths as the tsunami smashed into beaches without warning.

A national disaster has been announced in the low-lying Maldives islands, more than 2,500km (1,500 miles) from the quake's epicentre, after they were hit by severe flooding.

Aid promises

International organisations have already made pledges to help the victims.

The International Monetary Fund promised "whatever possible assistance"
The Red Cross launched an appeal for 5m euros (£3.5m; $6.8m)
The European Union pledged 3m euros (£2.1m; $4.1m)
Australia promised $10m (£4m; $7.7m) and sent two planes carrying drinking water and purification equipment to Indonesia
Russia sent 25 tons of humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka
The UK is sending a plane to Sri Lanka with plastic sheeting and tenting
France will send humanitarian aid and doctors to Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Sunday's tremor - the fifth strongest since 1900 - had a particularly widespread effect because it seems to have taken place just below the surface of the ocean, analysts say.

Experts say tsunamis generated by earthquakes can travel at up to 500km/h.

Considering the fact that the MM7.7 1906 Earthquake resulted in horizontal movement of 6m and that a 9.0 releases nearly 300 times as much energy, a 30m thrusting displacement along the inclined inteface is not out of the questions. There's a misconception about the Richter scale-each step up on the scale represents a 10 fold increase in the amplitude of the seismic waves as measured on a seismograph. This relates to each magntiude step being 32 times more energy release than the previous one. Consequently, when they were still calling it an 8.9 that is why they were saying that is was 1000 times more energy release than the MM6.9 Loma Prieta shock of 1989. The Moment Magnitude Scale is the more precise one and is the one in use today those many still say Richter Scale.

Can you please put that in english? "Earthquake day"? What are you talking about? They didn't show up in Thailand BEFORE the quake hit or they have disappeared since the quake?

I don't understand what point you were trying to make by posting that.

Okay, that totally explains things. Ha'aretz is an Israeli news source, which is nothing like al-Jazeera (BIG difference!) When I thought it was an al-Jazeera quote, I thought they were implying there was some sort of Israeli conspiracy :yayaya: and that 4000 Israelis weren't there when the tsunami hit. I was like, Yeah...right!

The death toll from Sunday's natural disaster in Southeast Asia has reached 23,000, of them 12,000 in Sri Lanka, 6,000 in India, 4,700 in Indonesia and over 800 in Thailand.

In a press conference held Monday afternoon at the Foreign Ministry, Deputy Director General Nissim Ben-Sheetrit said that so far 450 Israelis in the region have been contacted. Ministry officials said earlier that over 500 were still unaccounted for.

According to Ben-Sheetrit, "I cannot say with certainty that there are no Israeli fatalities. We are examining this possibility and I hope there would not be any. Currently, between 7 and 14 Israelis are known to have been injured".

Israeli Foreign Ministry officials and doctors flew to Southeast Asia on Monday to search for missing Israeli tourists and provide assistance to countries struck by a massive earthquake and tidal waves.

Israeli army doctors are to offer medical assistance in Thailand and Sri Lanka, and army teams will look for missing Israelis in southern India.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom told Israel Radio Monday that there were a limited number of Israeli casualties and possibly fatalities in the tsunamis that struck the region.

According to Shalom, the number of Israeli tourists injured in the quake appeared to be lower than what had been initially believed.

Four Israeli tourists were reported as missing on Monday morning, acting Israeli Consul in Bangkok, Shlomi Kaufman, told Army Radio. According to Kaufman, "We received reports from people who said they had witnessed that something happened to those four".

Ten Israelis are hospitalized in hospitals in and around the southern Thai island of Phuket. All sustained light to moderate injuries.

In addition, it appears there are no foreign casualties on the islands of Andaman in the Indian Ocean. Dozens of Israelis are known to be on that island.

The Foreign Ministry situation room in Jerusalem: 02 5303155.

Shalom said Israel would assist its citizens in every way possible and also offered Israel's assistance to the nations struck by the natural disaster. The Ministry is focusing on getting Israelis onto buses in Bangkok, from where they will be flown to Israel.

Israel's national carrier, EL AL, said it would not charge extra fees or cancellation fees to people wishing to push back planned flights to Thailand, and added it would expedite the return flights of Israelis from Bangkok.

Israelis have so far not appeared on a list of foreign nationals killed in the disaster published by the Thailand Police. Most Israelis are reported to have made their way to Ko Phangang, far from the afflicted areas, for a series of full moon parties that started on Christmas Eve.

Foreign Ministry Director-General Ron Prosor said that Israel would dispatch $100,000 worth of medicine and food to Thailand and India, Israel Radio reported. In addition, a Foreign Ministry delegation including three top doctors from the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem and an officer from the Home Front Command departed for the area to provide emergency assistance.

The death toll from the most powerful earthquake in four decades climbed steadily throughout Sunday as authorities counted bodies washed up on beaches and left hanging like ragdolls from trees. Foreign tourists were among the dead and the thousands of others who were reported missing. Tens of thousands fled the coasts for higher ground, fearing aftershocks and further flood surges.

On Monday afternoon, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz asked the Israel Defense Forces to ready a medical relief team for immediate dispatch to Thailand.

The IDF is also preparing to send humanitarian aid to the region, primarily Sri Lanka. The Defense Ministry said Monday that the teams would be sent as soon as their coordination with the ministry were completed.

Mofaz offered aid of two kinds - a search and rescue team from the Home Front Command, as well as consignments of food and medicines.

I understand now. There are several thousand Israelis in Thailand that haven't talked to anyone yet... same deal with the Americans missing. I thought it was some sort of conspiracy like the Israelis knew about it.

Over 24,000 now. This is just incredible. Watch for it to approach 100,000(from the aftermath including likely epidemics of disease).
