helen - am so sorry for your loss - we recently had to have our bassett of 14 years put to sleep and know it is so hard to lose a beloved pet. the fact that blackie had a hard time at birth could have been a sign he was not completely healthy. please realize you did nothing wrong and had he lived longer he may have had a prolonged illness which you could not have beared to witness as we did with our bassett. it is so much easier to have them go on their own than to have to make the choice. i know this may not be comforting to you now, but hopefully in time it will. once again, i am so sorry for your loss.

Helen, I haven't been very active in Storm2K lately, so I missed your problems about Blackie. I've had pets all my life and I am certain that your beloved Blackie knew that he was going to die and went off on his own. It's the way of animals, especially cats. They have a sixth sense about what is going on in their bodies that we humans can't begin to understand.

I lost my dearest Spyderman a few years back and I still miss him. His Persian cat sister and dog brother missed him awfully for a long time but we all adjusted slowly to life without him. I truly understand how hard it is for you to go on.
Helen, the important thing is to pull yourself together and try to make it through each day. I've been there too. My advice is is to try and stop beating yourself up over Blackie's death. As hard as it is, put away his dishes. Tell people who ask about him that he's gone.
Show his brother Tan that you still love him. Tan needs you Helen. More than ever before. Maybe when you are feeling the saddest you can go and get Tan and the two of you can "cry" together. I'm sure Tan wants to help you through this, he just doesn't know how.
I hope in time you can think of Blackie with joy instead of sadness. It will take time. But you can do it. Your friends will help you.
