by the quake. If they are talking about disease doubling, what affect would that have on humanitarian relief and would the disease spread rapidly??

With the toll as high as it is - and growing - it's going to happen.

Chad this is truly a disaster of epic (biblical) proportions. This disaster is truly unfathomable to the human mind because it has never happened before..

We have always heard of "tsunamis" and I know we've discussed them here before and tried to imagine what would happen if one like this occured. It is very odd, almost like a premonition as you have alluded to wthrmilagro, the timing of this plus the devastating hurricanes that have hit Florida this year. Not to mention the fact that we also had the movie "The Day After" come out that portrayed the worst case scenerios. It really makes you wonder...

You know Steph, I heard about the quake when I was flying into town, and I just could not believe. I truly believe more devastating things will occurr in the future, but gosh those people never had a freakin chance in hell. Things like this make me real sad....

No, they didn't have a chance. Earthquakes are bad enough, but can you imagine seeing a HUGE wave coming at you?? This is just awful!

Your right. I lived in California and one time we had huge breakers come in and I'll tell you man those waves were bad, but nothing compared to the tsunami. I really would not even know what to do if that came at me. I am literally speechless about this event, and I find myself talking about or reading it constantly.

WHO: Disease Could Double Asia Death Toll

GENEVA (AP) - The death toll from the Asian tidal waves could eventually double because of disease, the World Health Organization warned Tuesday.

"There is certainly a chance that we could have as many dying from communicable diseases as from the tsunami," Dr. David Nabarro, head of crisis operations for WHO, told reporters.

The death toll from the earthquake and associated tidal waves is already at 44,000, and officials expect it to rise further.

Nabarro said the main threat to life now is communicable diseases associated with a lack of clean water and sanitation.

"The initial terror associated with the tsunamis and the earthquake itself may be dwarfed by the longer term suffering of the affected communities," Nabarro warned.
