This probably belongs in a "Summer Weather" folder but as it's January, I'll post it here.
Record temperatures for January 1 have already fallen in a number of Eastern cities. Others might break their records later:
• Baltimore: Set new record at Noon: 66°; Could reach 70°
• New York City: Record: 62°, 1966; Noon: 60°; Record should fall by several degrees (I expect 64°)
• Philadelphia: "How much [heat] for Philly?" Plenty! Set new record at Noon: 63°; Could push toward 70°
• Richmond: Record: 78°, 1952; Noon: 69°; Should reach 70°
• Washington, DC: Record: 68°, 1966; Noon: 55°; Mired in clouds and a south wind

I would not be surprised if later this month the East gets slammed by severe cold/snow/ice. It wouldn't be the first time folks. Let's not write winter off just yet. If its still pushing 70 degrees or anything like it by February 25th then yeah I'd venture to speculate that winter might be a dud. But I think the East will see some extremely severe winter weather late this month and/or next month.
One more thing, I think this winter will be characterized by unbelievable variability. It will get really pleasant, near 70 degrees with balmy south winds, then turn around and get severely cold with a lot of snow and/or ice and very, very high winds, then just as quickly turn mild again with possible torrential rains then cold again.
Can you even begin to imagine what the 2005 severe weather season is gonna be like, with all this crazy variability? Can you say record severe weather season with multiple Hallam, Nebraska tornado outbreaks?
Look out folks.
