Hey when you got a generator and gas stock supply like I do. Theres not a thing to worry about. Ice Ice Baby!!!! Love the sound of the trees cracking and watching the ice accumulating on the trees and power lines. Best winterstorm of my life was the carolina crusher of Jan. 25, 2000, also in ne ga know as the Y2k Icestorm.
I am a CAD LOVER and always will be.
This sucks... in a big way.

Only thing is...not everywxone has a generator...or...is able to afford one...also generators can be just as dangerous as kerosene heaters for ie.

I'm noticing a pattern in northern missouri/KC-area ice storms. It seems like every major one seems to happen every two years around new year's day.
major ice storm before last: dec 2000 - jan 2001
last major ice storm: late dec 2002 - jan 2003
this one: early jan 2005
Kind eerie. Are we on a strict biannual schedule for ice storms up here or what? You could almost set your watch by it. I hate to think about xmas 06 going into 07.
I'm really beginning to think the KC area is the freezing rain/ice storm capital of the world. The town I live in (Macon, MO) is nicknamed "The City of Maples" because we have an overabundance of trees here, mostly maple. The last storm caused about a third of them to disappear due to falling over or being damaged to a point where it had to be removed.
The branches of the trees that are still around are STILL abnormally short and weird looking, even 2 years later. If we get another one, they'll start calluing us "The City of Stumps".
Christ, this weather is a pain.

Kansas Citys last major ice storm was late Jan. 2002-it was the only major event of the famed non 2001-2002 winter. That was a serious situation-the one unfolding currently, in my opinion, is much worse-just as much if not more precip. with some fairly good sleet and snow at the end plus winds and plunging temps. In 2002 it never got that cold-after this one, we could have lows in the single digits and if there are major power outages: this is really looking to be quite serious for this area.

Nothing of this event yet. It's 10:30pm MST (yeah, one of the few in that timezone) and the only thing happening is the barometer is dropping steadily.

According to latest imagery, there's some moisture creeping in from the southwest ... showing up as rain too, which is not a good sign since it's 28F outside.
... a snow day from work would be cool. Just as long as I don't have to drive on the ice.
