Flood and ice storm warnings issued for Indiana counties

#1 Postby TazzyD » Tue Jan 04, 2005 8:25 am

The Flood Watch remains in effect from late tonight to Thursday
morning... for the following areas...

In indiana:

Bartholomew... brown... Clay... Daviess... Decatur... Greene... Hancock...
Hendricks... Henry... Jackson... Jennings... Johnson... Knox... Lawrence...
Marion... Martin... Monroe... Morgan... Owen... Parke... Putnam... rush...
Shelby... Sullivan... Vermillion and Vigo.

Some cities in the watch include Bedford... Bloomington... Columbus...
Indianapolis... Seymour... Shelbyville... Terre Haute and Vincennes.

Rainfall... heavy at times will return to central Indiana Tuesday
night. Rain will persist through early Thursday morning. Residents of
central Indiana will receive another 2 to as much as 4 inches of rain
by Thursday morning.

This is a serious situation with the potential for widespread
flooding. The ground simply cannot tolerate any additional rainfall.
Rainfall of the magnitude expected has the potential to create
dangerous flooding problems.

A Flood Watch means that flooding is possible in or near the watch
area... but is not imminent. If you are in the watch area... check your
preparedness requirements... especially if you have interests along
area rivers. Keep informed... and be ready for action if flooding is
observed or if a Flood Warning is issued.

People in the watch area should continue to be aware of the
possibility for heavy rainfall. Avoid low lying areas... and be
careful when approaching Highway dips and underpasses.

This product... along with other weather... hydrological and climate
information... is available on the web at http://www.Crh.NOAA.Gov/ind.

It's even worse for the Northern Part Of Central Indiana. Ice Storm Warning and it looks to be MAJOR. Possibly up to 3/4 of inch of ice!!!! Some isolated places could have 1 inch of ice. That is MAJOR !! Lots of power outages are in store and accidents!!

Yeah, I definitely would NOT want the freezing rain and power outages. Been there, done that, didn't like it at all.

Freezing rain is by far the worse of winter weather types of precip (Or any type of precip for that matter) While the scenes will be beautiful, they will be very hazardous

Here's a warning for it:

... The National Weather Service in Indianapolis in has issued an Ice
Storm Warning...

From midnight tonight to 600 am EST Thursday...

Rain will develop this evening and change to freezing rain late
tonight. Freezing rain will continue Wednesday and most of
Wednesday night. Serious icing is possible on trees and power lines.

Ice accumulations in excess of three quarter inches are possible in
Howard and Carroll counties. Ice accumulations of one quarter to one
half inch will occur elsewhere. Winds of 10 to 20 mph with
occasional gusts to 25 are expected.

Any travel is strongly discouraged. If you leave the safety of being
indoors... you are putting your life at risk.

Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations...
slow down and allow extra time when traveling. Practice your winter
safety rules... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your
car in case of emergency.

If you plan to use alternate sources of heat or electricity in your
home... be careful. Observe all safety precautions to avoid Carbon
monoxide poisoning... electrocution... or a fire. Portable
generator should only be operated outdoors in a dry and well
ventilated area.

That pretty much sums it up. But people need to still watch the weather forecasts. It is almost like when they are trying to predict where an eye of a hurricane will hit and 15 miles either direction makes a difference.
