East Coast Storm Threat After 20th

#1 Postby Anonymous » Fri Jan 07, 2005 9:23 am

Has anyone heard about eh east coast storm threat after the 20th? They said if the NAO goes negative like forecasted, we could get a load of snow in one storm. They are saying there is a possibility of a MAJOR snowstorm in the east after the 20th. IF any meteorologist are on this website can you help me or give me some info. If you are not a meteorologist feel free to post your opinion also.

All I know is we have one local Met who is overly enthusiastic with forecasts. He mentioned on air a few days ago, that the Ohio Valley might get the Storm of the Century, Jan. 14-16th. My hubby who thinks I'm into wx way too much is spreading this forecast around, thinking it's hilarious to say it will be The Storm of the Century, with it being only 2005. I said I agree with you there.....possibly the storm of the decade maybe...

I think this local Met has stock with Kroger's (our grocery chain). Somewhat serious too!

I'll keep you posted. Apparently this storm will produce more snow and ice than the one that hit right before xmas! That storm dumped anywhere from 9 to 31 inches of snow, along with inches of ice east of here. Folks were w/o power for days, S2K member TLC lost her power for 6 days in Kentucky.

So we'll see....I will post any official info I get about this possible winter event. But next week, not this week. Too soon.

Looks like above avg precip from the 15th on......The big question is whether enough cold air will be in place. 15 - 20th still calling for above
avg temps enough so to produce rain/ice event. It will be close....

NWS D.C. is stating that it appears to be a pattern change (per GFS) after next Thursday the 13th here in D.C Metro. It appears to me that the East may get the patttern change on or about the 15th, as many have eluded to here and other places. It does not mean major winter storm, just that the pattern will be more conducive and it will be much colder than this week, more climo to a little below.

See donsutherland's posts. He and some of our other mets have been hinting at a pattern change after the first half of the month.

On TWC's weekly planner segment, they showed rain/show next Thursday for the Ohio Valley. And hinted at a big wx change. That is all they'd elude to though at this point.

The MLK holiday and weekend is usually the time snowstorms can hit Cincinnati. Don't ask me what the percentage is, but it's what I've noticed now for over 10 years. So much so that our school district uses the Friday after as a teacher in service day. That week is a 3 day one for schools, if snowdays aren't needed.

Which part of the Ohio Valley will be getting this "Storm of the Century"? If its rain keep it the hell out of my area. We are still flooding and cant handle anymore!
