Hawaii Thunderstorm Warning

#1 Postby TexasSam » Sun Jan 09, 2005 5:25 am

This is something I have never seen:
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HONOLULU HAS ISSUED A

* SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR...
THE ISLAND OF OAHU IN HONOLULU COUNTY

* UNTIL 1245 AM HST

* AT 1146 PM HST...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A
LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS IN
EXCESS OF 60 MPH. THESE STORMS WERE LOCATED ALONG A LINE EXTENDING
FROM 12 MILES NORTHEAST OF KAHUKU TO 35 MILES WEST OF MAILI...OR
ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM 31 MILES NORTH OF HONOLULU TO 54 MILES
WEST OF HONOLULU...AND MOVING EAST AT 35 MPH.

* SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE NEAR...
LAIE BY 1155 PM HST
WAIANAE AND HAUULA BY MIDNIGHT HST
SCHOFIELD BARRACKS...PUNALUU AND MAILI BY 1205 AM HST
WHEELER AFB...WHITMORE VILLAGE AND WAHIAWA BY 1210 AM HST
NANAKULI BY 1215 AM HST

DOPPLER RADAR HAS INDICATED SOME WEAK ROTATION WITHIN THIS STORM.
WHILE NOT IMMEDIATELY LIKELY...A TORNADO MAY STILL DEVELOP. IF A
TORNADO IS SPOTTED...ACT QUICKLY AND MOVE TO A PLACE OF SAFETY IN A
STURDY STRUCTURE...SUCH AS A BASEMENT OR SMALL INTERIOR ROOM.

THIS IS A DANGEROUS STORM. IF YOU ARE IN ITS PATH...PREPARE
IMMEDIATELY FOR DAMAGING WINDS...DESTRUCTIVE HAIL...AND DEADLY CLOUD
TO GROUND LIGHTNING. PEOPLE OUTSIDE SHOULD MOVE TO A SHELTER...
PREFERABLY INSIDE A STRONG BUILDING BUT AWAY FROM WINDOWS.

IN ADDITION TO LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS...CONTINUOUS CLOUD TO
GROUND LIGHTNING IS OCCURRING WITH THIS STORM. MOVE INDOORS
IMMEDIATELY! LIGHTNING IS ONE OF NATURES NUMBER ONE KILLERS.
REMEMBER...IF YOU CAN HEAR THUNDER...YOU ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO BE
STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

I believe once last year, there was either a severe t-stormand/or tornado warning for the Hawaiian Island(s), and it was documented on this board. But, yeah, your are right, it is a rare occurrence.

Impressive Radar Loop of Hawaiian Severe Thunderstorms

#3 Postby dvdweatherwizard » Sun Jan 09, 2005 10:58 pm

Well shoot, I HAD the impressive radar loop up here, but I guess the file is too big to handle for my website that I upload things to. If anybody wants to see the radar loop that I made, feel free to PM me, and I'll be happy to send it to you!
