During my year in Vietnam, I was located not far from the end of the runway in Nha Trang.
I used to be surprised now and then by the sounds of the fighters taking off in the night (but nothing so close as this would suggest), but always remembered it was a "good sound" since they were on my side.
Still like to drive over to Luke AFB and sit not far from the north end of their runway and enjoy the F-16's!

Strangely, my Dad used to take us to Lambert Field (STL) to one of the "parking spots" at the end of the runways to watch the military craft take off (back when McDonnell was in full vigor)...even in 1996, he picked me up at the motel west of the airport to go and sit there again during our vacation...one last time.

Funny you should mention St Louis. When driving to the McDonnell Douglas plant, it's amazing to watch that parking lot off the airport fill up at lunch and folks just watch planes take off and land.
I seem to remember that happening at Sky Harbor too.
There dont seem to be too many places on Northern Ave where you can pull over and watch planes any more, are there? I guess you can park at the base golf course...
75 days and counting!!!
