Regarding my other thread about my piece of junk new computer that is about a year old now...
thread: http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=55656

Please share whatever you can about what computer to buy and what computer not to buy? I'm definitely thinking Dell but I want opinions from everyone as everyone here uses a computer! lol

What do you recommend and why?

I think what I'm looking for is 512mb, 160gb hard drive, CD RW, DVD-rom. I don't know much about the technical stuff. I'd like a flat screen but it's not necessary and I already have a 4-in-1 printer/copier/scanner/fax so I don't need that.

Please share your opinion...I'm begging ya! 8-)

I have a HP Pavillion7865 that I am happy with after I had to put in memory and upgraded to XP. It has a 80Gb hardrive, dvdplayer cd burner, floppy drive and 4 usb ports, two in front , two in back. I also have HP 932c printer and HP Precision Scanjet Pro hooked up to it. So far it has been a reliable system for me.

An Emachines brand and a Lexmark Z715 printer here...for a less expensive route. :D

I have a Dell Dimension 4400. Got it a few years ago and it is still working great. I would go with a Dell if I were you.

STAY AWAY from Compaq and avoid HP unless it has something you really want(CD burner).

Dell Dimension 4600 or 4700 (whatever the newest number is) w/four-year 24/7 support package, at least 40GB hard drive, and Norton 2005 Anti-Virus, set up for Windows XP Home.

Ya can't lose.

I love my Mac iBook, but it's probably not the cheapest route to go. If you want to stick with a Windows machine, I'd say Dell or eMachine is the way to go! Good luck!

Dell Dimension 4400 and Dell Inspiron 5100.

The 4400 is my third Dell desk top. I've had no problems with them.

Ok, thanks everyone. Keep those opinions coming!

MGC...I really don't know, just the best deal I can get on a GOOD computer.

Purdue...at this moment, I'm so sick of Windows and their stupid messages that aren't a bit of help, I'd probably buy a Mac if there was one in front of me right now.

Brent - actually, I've had Compaqs in the past that I was happy with, but I know that they are not Dells.

Marty has a Dell that is about 4 years old. He got some nasty virus or worm one time and had to get everything re-installed, but it's never been the same since. A good friend of mine swears by Dell.

Well as much as you have heard me go on about my HP in a negative way i must say other then the troubles i have had which was NOT the computers fault i have had no others. And when i say not the computers fault i mean most of mine have been related to trojans/viruses/user picked up from the net which basically can happen to any computer especially if your not using any security.

Reminder be carefully when it comes to how much ram your computer will have.

kman...it gets used a lot and between what I save on here for work and for fun, I do use up some space but mine has 40GB and I think that's been plenty. Heck, I really don't know. I always figure too much space is better than not enough so I'd rather pay a little more and make sure I have enough. Right now I have 256MB and 40GB. If I'm going to get a new one, I guess I'll up that to 512MB. I think I mentioned 160GB in my original post and I have no idea why. I don't really know what to get but Dell is offering a flat screen upgrade through tomorrow so if I want that, I better decide fast.
