From warm and wet to cold and dry???

#1 Postby Planetsnow » Wed Jan 12, 2005 1:05 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. The almanac forum is gone for now and I have been observing this forum for a long time now, but decided to finally register and join the fun. :D

I'm from Rochester, NY, and this winter has been pathetic as far as snowfall is concerned so far. Ok, here's the thing. Yeah, I get it that the pattern is about to change to colder for the East, at least for a while. Who knows how long it will last? But, assuming that we do get back to normal or colder than normal into late jan and early feb, who is to say that we will have more snow? Are there signs that the southern jet will phase with the northern one to give more snow to a large part of the east? What if it gets cold but dries out substantially, leaving the East with a continued snow drought? That is my fear. If someone can provide proof that with the cold air will come storminess, I will be less skeptical. Otherwise, I am not expecting much with a cold and dry pattern, like what will happen next week.

Welcome to S2K, PS!

LOL! Your screen name sort of sounds as if it was created like mine was (in the midst of inclement weather).

Am I to understand that you are from Rochester, NY and are concerned about it getting dry? I spent a couple of years at RIT and I seem to remember lots of gray skies and damp weather!!! Seem to remember a joke about Kodak locating in Rochester because it is the biggest darkroom in the world!

LOL. It is pretty cloudy and damp in the winter, but so far, mild and damp, not cold. Last two years were quite snowy with lots of LES, but Rochester itself was not in the heart of the LES. We haven't had a huge mesoscale synoptic type snowstorm around here since Christmas 2002, which is what I want!

the upcoming pattern will be extremely dry. if you live in a place where you get clippers and lake effect you will be ok, otherwise, this pattern will kill the chances for noreasters

NO,NO,NO. I Want snow! Please let us have our noreasters back! When I first moved to "lovely" New Jersey I called it the land of slush. We had a couple of good years, but unfortunately this year it is again the land of slush. A little snow, followed by sleet and rain. ICK. :(
