You all can go ahead and rough me up if you want, but I AM a smoker and I have NEVER thrown a butt out my car window or littered with them. As is said when one goes hiking, canoeing and hiking "If you can pack it in you can pack it out". I use an ashtray or I put my cig out then put it my cigarette box wrapping or a little plastic baggie until I can dispose of them properly. When my hubby and I go canoeing and camping we clean up not just our own, but litter and any butts we see left lying around by others. I ask people I'm sitting next to in a public place (those that allow smoking) if my smoking will bother them. If it does I go outside and away from others. I've always disposed of ALL my litter properly and always will. Some people will go ahead and form a negative opinion one just because one does smoke before they even know the person that one is. I can't control that. I can only control my own behaviour.

Well said and the same applies to me as well. I dont toss my butt's out the window either. One thing i hate and that is littering especially out of car windows etc. And believe i have given a few arse chewings to people who have been in the car with me and tried to do that.

Either way dont lump us all in the same catagory.

I'm a smoker and I make sure that if I don't have an ashtray or garbage can nearby that I put it out and then stick it in my pocket wrapped in a tissue until I do find a garbage can. If I'm really in a mood and I see someone toss a cigarette out of their window while driving, I honk. :grr:

 Dennis!!!

It takes 10 years for one cigarette butt to decompose. Just one.

I want to start off with the disclaimer that I have nothing against folks from Alabama, but we were in Destin and this chick with big hair and red lipstick (in a car with Alabama plates) dumped her cigarette AND her McDonald's bag out the window while sitting in traffic.

I was already PO'd about something else and got OUT of my car, picked up her crap and her cigarette and dumped it BACK in her car. Told her to take that sh - - back to Alabama with her.....

When I moved down here from KY, I noticed a world of difference between the amount of discarded butts on the streets here and the ones in KY. Of course, it could be because tobacco is a cash crop in KY and plenty more people smoke there than here. Also, UTMB is a smoke-free campus (inside and outdoors) so there's not much of it around campus. But even in my neighborhood, on The Strand, and on the beach/Seawall area, there's just not much of the garbage at all.

However, that all changes during Mardi Gras, Beach Party Weekend, and during tropical storms when trash ends up strewn all over the place. But we usually wake up the next day and it's back to clean again. :)

GOOD FOR YOU!!! If one did that here, unfortunately, you would probably be shot. If and when I get the cahones to do that here in Houston, I'd probably say something like "if you wouldn't do this in your own house, don't do it here."

When I was a mere child of age 4 or 5, my mother taught me never to dispose of litter on the ground. But put it in my pockets until I could find a garbage can. She was born and raised in Scotland and back then - the dark ages - the fine was $100 for littering over there. She said it was a shame we didn't have such steep littering fines over here. Now I can't say for certain if they were really $100 but I swear that is what she told me - circa 1960!!!

To this day I come home with lots of stuff in my pockets and my kids do also. I've passed along this habit to my girls too. Proud of that!

We have to check every pocket before doing the laundry. Who knows what you'll find in our pockets!

I don't smoke and I don't litter either. Occasionally I'll drop something unintentionally, but I pick it up. I don't want to pick up after others, so why would I force others to do it for me? But, I gotta admit, Dennis, that act took real guts!

There are plenty of fines in place across the country. The problem is, they don't enforce them.

Some places i know do. Like where i used to live at the coast in Delaware. A cop in some of the towns there catches you doing that and they will stop you and give you a 75.00 ticket. And yes i have known a couple of people this has happend to. Well deserved imo. I dont feel sorry at all for people who get fined for that.

But yeah alot of other places do not do enough imo.

I can just see Alicia saying "THIS IS NICEVILLE AND WE WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

If more people and also the police would step up to the plate and give these litterers what they deserve, I think that might help the problem a lot.

Hey j, let's start a new town called Storm2k! (Something like niceville)

I always dislike smokers... I will not date anyone that smokes... its like kissing an ashtray.

Freshman year, my roommate was a smoker, she didn't like going outside to smoke, so she went in the bathroom to smoke (UWGB has bathrooms in your dormroom)... it wreaked. Sophomore year at UW-Milwaukee, several of my suitemates smoked weed... so that smell was everywhere. The one thing I don't like is people throwing their butts out the window right at you... the butt comes directly at your windshield.

I'm sorry, I've grown up in a smoke-free house... I guess I like the smell of my clothes without smelling like an ashtray.

But on the other hand, when I'm sticking all over the bowling approach, I'll take ashes and spread them all over the bottom of my bowling shoes... a little trick my dad taught me. That IS the only time I'll thank smokers.

It's amazing how many perfect people happened to become members of S2K. I guess I must have missed the pre-qualification assessment when I became a member....

Every aspect of society has something negative to it. Walk through any parking lot and look at ALL the gum that someone has spit out. Does that mean I should hate all gum-chewers or point my finger at them as if I'm something special and they are scum???

Nope - people are people and everyone does something that someone else does not approve of. Speeding, driving drunk, rudeness, the list goes on and on....

For anyone to portray themselves as perfect or better than their fellow humans is hogwash. Everybody's got something - or does something - that others find distasteful...

Very good point about the gum. I'm a gum chewer (#2 addiction, behind #1 Pepsi addiction). Years ago I used to toss it on the ground. Then I heard it was harmful to wildlife, same as cig butts are. So I never dispose of gum this way anymore (20+ years now). But occasionally I hear that some countries ban gum entirely - it's illegal there, because of the litter problem I guess.

BTW, we were joking about S2K members 'being perfect', I hope you realize that!!! When j comes out with any statement, FYI it's 9 out of 10 times meant sarcastically or 'tongue in cheek'!!!

Miss Mary - I appreciate good-natured sarcasm as much as the next guy, and I was not directing my comments at J or you. But my point, at least according to the majority of responses in this thread, is that many of the respondents seemingly live in glass houses.

Sure, it's easy to criticize anything we choose. But when folks purport themselves to be such "good-doers" on one hand (or both!!), are they considering that they themselves are most probably being criticized by others for the things they do that may be viewed as equally distasteful?

I am a smoker and I get my share of criticism for it – and I'm sure I've discarded a few butts in my time. But those same people who are so critical of me fail to see themselves as equally "bad" for some of the things they do. For instance, speeding in a residential neighborhood, tailgating, driving drunk, polluting the air and hogging gas with their SUVs, allowing their children to run rampant in a store, cheating on their spouse, beating on their spouse, cussing with no regard in the presence of my wife… As I said, the list could – and does – go on and on.

My bottom line, I guess, is that nobody is perfect and in fact most are far short of perfect. I'm pretty sure that's why there are truly very few real glass houses to be found…
