David - my oldest brother did too! He played guitar and was in a band in HS. His favorite band of all time are the Ventures. Remember them? Walk Don't Run? He also loved Wipe Out (but I don't think the V. did that song?).

When I hear surfing music I naturally think of my brother. He enlisted in the Navy right out of HS, and got stationed in Long Beach, CA for a while. He learned to surf during that time and almost moved out there after he got out. All any of us has to do is mention the Ventures or Wipe Out and he's gone, thinking back to that carefree time of his life - surfing in Cali - forn - i - a!

I indirectly have my brothers to thank for my early exposure to music. Because I thought it was cool to hang out in their room when they were gone at school, listen to their music, steal their change lying on dressers, all of which they now say they knew of......really made me love music early on. Most of my friends were still playing with toys and barbies, while I was listening to their music, either next door in my room or when they were out of the house. Oh the fun I used to have in that room.....LOL They tease me now b/c I thought in my little kid way, they wouldn't even know I was in there!!! (BTW I took a few quarters/dimes/nickles here and there for the ice cream truck!). My one brother said he intentionally left coins out for me after a while. He'd strategically place them in ways he knew I had been in there! LOL

LOL, boy, you folks have dragged out some memorable songs!

I honestly can't remember MY first single owned, but, I
do remember listening to my big brother's new Beatles singles
("Let It Be", "Get Back", etc.) on an old plastic green and
white record player, and, watching the apple on the record
label spin 'round and 'round and....well, kinda explains me,
now, eh?

"Get Back" is still one of my all-time favorite songs!

The album wasn't called Love me Tender is was called ELVIS and was his second album. It came out in 1956. It was a major step for my parents to buy this album. Most parents thought he was a bad influence on their kids.

I became interested in music around age eleven (1973), and among the first top-40 hits I recall purchasing were:

"Sing" (Karen and Richard Carpenter)

"Have You ever been Mellow" (Olivia Newton-John)

"Paper Roses" (Marie Osmond)
