This cold wave is nothing compared to the February 1996 one. The temperature fall down to 13 below here in St. Louis for two nights, and that was on bare ground. If there was snow cover, then we would've likely broken our all time record of -22. International Falls, MN got down to -46. Tower, MN, was the coldest, with a new state record of -60. Not saying that this isn't a decent cold snap, but I've seen much worse. Even just last season, Grand Forks, ND saw lows in the -40s with highs in the -20s for many consecutive days.

Record Low for MN is -60F, the Dakotas have also hit -60F temperatures and the record low for the lower 48 is -70F so such temperatures HAVE indeed been recorded in the CONUS. For that matter, UT has seen -69F, CA -45F and AZ -40F.

Don't forget -48 in WA (which I was very surprised at because it never seems to get that cold here).

Maybe on the Western side of Washington, but on the Eastern side it is a whole different story. Just look at the recent cold snap that they had, some places got down to -20 F or so, and this usually happens about once every year for them. Now, just think what kind of temperatures a FULL Arctic Outbreak slamming into Eastern Washington would do.

-27 is the record for this state. The coldest since I've been alive was about 5 degrees after the Blizzard of 1993(it was 2 in Birmingham setting an all-time record for March).

Teens are cold enough.

I did hit the single digits(9.7 or something like that), two years ago, just 3 weeks after we moved here.

Geez... it's been -2 in FLORIDA before.

That 49.2 inside was well, sad. You don't have a heater? Geez, if my room goes below 65 I'm miserable.

By the way, it's already -29 at 7 p.m. CST in International Falls, MN with the arctic high right on top of them. If winds stay calm all night they'll go into the -40s. That place is beautiful in the summer (been there to visit family and go fishing about a million times) but you couldn't pay me enough to visit this time of year!

DETAILS...that is the MIN temp that little ghetto indoor/outdoor therm has recorded(probably sometime this fall) I don't reset this one very often(i have several) It can get cold when you leave the windows open on frosty fall nights...

Its about 60F avg inside the house (i live in WI...i can take the cold--just not -27f)

remember... i had a low temp on Aug 20ish of 35F with frost visible on the roof... no way in hell i'm i turning the furnace on in SUMMER

good luck in Madison...a lot of high school kids i went to school with went there...really liked it
