Partly Cloudy on Saturday Afternoon?

#1 Postby jimvb » Fri Jan 21, 2005 8:16 am

Take a look at the Canadian Meteorological Centre's maps for this weekend. One way of getting there is to go to http://www.richastro.org, locate the strip of squares under the Pleiades, click on that, then click on the squares in the row that says "Cloud Cover". Especially interesting would be to run the animation on the resulting page.

These images show a *hole* developing in the storm on Saturday. On Saturday at 5 pm EST, the CMC says that the skies will become partly cloudy, and furthermore, with more clear sky than clouds! A hole develops in the storm. So how does this factor into how much snow, freezing rain, and sleet we are going to get?

I doubt there will be a hole in the storm, it might represent a dry slot. Do not get too wrapped up in such a model run. Watch for consistencies and at this point decide which model you beleive, the ETA or the GFS. Look for concensus as we get closer to the event.Chester stands to see 1-3 inches of snow followed by a mixed bad of precip, then probably a quick burst of snow on the back side. How much snow did you get last night down there where you live? My Chester branch employees say about 2-3 inches of snow. Cars this morning coming north on 1-95 were snow and ice covered.

Snow in Chester

#3 Postby jimvb » Fri Jan 21, 2005 9:15 am

On Wednesday, the snow started at noon, and lasted unil 1500. By 1230 the roads were already treacherous. Last night, the snow started at 1700, as I was driving home from work. It snowed off and on until 3 in the morning. The first storm put down 1.1 inches at my house with 0.10 inch precipitation. The second one was 0.9 inches of snow with 0.08 precipitation. So the total is 2 inches out of 0.18 inch of precipitation. The snow here caused many activities to cancel.
