Possible Weekend Snowstorm: Some Quick Thoughts

The latest forecast here in Pittsburgh is calling for 4 to 8 inches during the day Saturday with some additional accumlation Saturday night. So about 5 to 9 or maybe even 6 to 10 inches total, if we get lucky, might happen here. The mountains just to the east may get up to a foot. Does that sound about right?

Latest modeling is growing more aggressive. Places that could see heavy accumulations of possibly 10" or more include parts of Ohio, PA, Maryland, Delaware, NJ, NY, CT, RI, and MA. I'll have final estimates late today.

From what I have been hearing, this storm could be a nasty one in many places. It seems to have already taken shape in the Dakotas. And it looks pretty mean:



This image from Intellicast shows a monster with a hump, pink legs, and a crown spitting at us, or maybe at eastern Iowa. It appears to be heading for the Mid-Atlantic states.

Both 12Z Model runs of the ETA and GFS are broadcasting a moister and stronger solution. I live in Pittsburgh and am anticipating 10-14 inches as the snow to water content will probably be around 15:1 for this storm. Based on 12Z FOUS output of .75 liquid precip for the strom.

The ingredients continue to fall into place for a major snowstorm. Currently, it appears that among the following cities have a high probability of seeing at least 10" or snow (after the 18z runs, I'll have final estimates):

Baltimore
Boston
New York City
Newark
Philadelphia
Providence
White Plains

Following the storm, it will likely remain unseasonably cold in the East perhaps through Monday. Moderation might then occur before another cold air mass returns late in the week. Whether that sets the stage for another snowfall in parts of this region remains to be seen. The ensemble forecasts for the AO and NAO certainly offer hints of wintry potential down the road.

For now, the much of the East Coast will likely see its biggest snowstorm of the season.
