Hey, plan a trip to Nebraska or Kansas sometime in the Spring. Find yourself a nice supercell thunderstorm and park yourself right in front of it. When it approaches, don't leave, stay and experience all that mother nature has to offer. If you're lucky enough, maybe she'll spin an F5 tornado down for you to experience up close. But again, don't leave. You would want to know what it's like for those poor souls who live there and have to deal with that horror.

Why I live in Minnesota

My daughter-in-law (who lives in Hialeah Florida) asked me why I stay here when it's -10 for a high with a wind chill of -35 and I ALWAYS say "Because it's so beautiful in Spring, Summer and Fall!

The experience i had that made me a lot more interested in the weather was back in June of 2003... We took a trip out to the Big Horn MTns of WY...what a joke..this is what happens when you don't watch the weather...:)

Image

so after the tent almost collasped because the snow was so heavy, we decided to drive back home the next day...June 24(?)..it was the day that there was the tornado outbreak in SD...I missed most of them by an hour or so, but had to take shelter in a rest station with 50 other people because tornadoes were all around us...National Geographic had a big write up of those tornadoes in one of there issues ( i have it!)

Image
a tidbit from the magazine
The tornado that tore through Manchester, South Dakota, on June 24, 2003, was one of 67 that struck the state that day, tying a national record for the number of tornadoes within a state in a 24-hour period

Looking at the tornado paths from that day, 1 tornado did cross the road i was on, but i'm not sure when...
I will add that the drive down I-90 that night, made the trip worth the 2000mile/2.5 day trip...

i'm ready for spring, summer...

I stayed in a hotel in Hialeah (?)...the airplanes from MIA Airport drove me crazy... I'm not fan of dewpoints over 70+, unless there is a batch of T-storms attached!

SE CT is the bust capital of New England when it comes to active weather we never get tornadoes, ice storms, or the big snows.

Cat5survivor...

Having been born and raised in Minnesota (I left when I was 22)... I agree that it can be nice there at times but summer is really not so great.

The humidity and the bugs are pretty intense in summer.

Spring comes late to MN... the trees don't leaf out until the first week of May and then you have about 4 weeks before the humidity and bugs make an appearance. You can get some awesome thunderstorms though.

Fall is nice... but very short. The leaves turn colors for about 2 weeks before a serious cold front moves through and rips the trees bare in about mid-October.

And winter is just plain tough. It can be brutally cold and windy and without snow the landscape is very barren and brown. And the cars are soooo dirty all winter!! Although after a snowstorm its nice.

What I would miss most though (if I ever moved back there) is the mountains and the ocean. I just love being surrounded by mountains and being close to the ocean... whenever we go back to visit family I realize how flat the land is up there.

I will say though... the people are really nice and the schools are good.
