Elementary students try to hijack school bus
Friday, January 21, 2005

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Three 11-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl tried to hijack their school bus near Punxsutawney this morning.

State police said the four hatched the plot yesterday. Just after 8 a.m. today, one of the boys pulled a knife from a book bag and held it near another student. He demanded driver Janet McQuown, 52, stop and get off the bus.

A police new release says she pulled over along Pine Tree Church Road in Oliver Township and "the knife was removed from the juvenile's possession." It doesn't say how.

The bus, with the hijackers and about 40 other children, arrived safely at Mapleview Elementary, where the unnamed offenders were taken into custody.

Two were turned over to juvenile authorities and two went home with their parents.

The news release did not immediately say what the hijackers intended to do with the bus.

At least. The one that held the other student by knife-point? He deserves a little more.

They should be expelled from school and registered through the state then sent to a training school for troubled youth.

The kid holding the knife should get time in a juvenile detention facility and expulsion from the school and feel very very lucky that was not my child he held a knife to.For the rest, expulsion from the school. It's time we quit coddling kids like this. They want to be little criminals, let's treat them like criminals.

Yep. If they don't do something, there is no telling where this kid will end up.

I agree with everything above my post. But also send them out on a chain gang cleaning garbage off the freeways. Maybe he would get struck by a vehicle.

Take all four of them to the nearest federal prison and let them see what happens to people who lead a life of violence. Then hook 'em up with rehabilitated gang members for a few weeks to see the other side of life. Then put them through the system for a day or so for a trial run of what they'll get if the choose to keep being hard core. Typically, if kids that age get a sense of what hard core is they turn away from it.

I have a feeling if they did something so stupid at a young age there are problems at home for one child if not all three. Maybe sending them home to the parents wasnt the best decision.

Full Story from the Punxsutawney Spirit...

Four students attempt bus takeover

Police: 10-, 11-year-olds use knife in attempt to take control

By Darcy Fargo Of The Spirit

PUNXSUTAWNEY - Students involved in an alleged plot to overtake a school bus en route to Mapleview Elementary School Friday have been disciplined but could face more, according to the district superintendent.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, four juveniles - three 11-year-old males and a 10-year-old female - attempted to take control of their bus by knife-point at 8:09 a.m. while the bus was traveling along Pine Tree Church Road near Wonderling Road in Oliver Township Friday morning.

The bus was driven by Janet S. McQuown, 52, Punxsutawney.

McQuown is an employee of Krise Transportation.

Police said one of the male juveniles removed a knife from a book bag and held it near another student while demanding that the bus be stopped and McQuown exit the bus.

District Superintendent Dr. J. Thomas Frantz said Friday that it was his understanding that the student held near the knife knew of the alleged plan, and that this action - pretending to be hurt - was a ruse instigated by the older student to get McQuown's attention.

Police said McQuown stopped the bus, at which time the knife was removed from the juvenile's possession. Frantz confirmed that McQuown took the knife from the student.

Along with the alleged juvenile offenders, 40 other elementary-aged children were aboard the bus at the time of the incident, police said.

Once the bus arrived at Mapleview Elementary School, school officials took immediate action with the juveniles and contacted police.

Frantz said the students involved in the incident were disciplined Friday by Principal Shari Weber, who also left open the possibility for further discipline, including further review of the case by Frantz.

Police said two of the male juveniles were placed into the custody of the Jefferson County Juvenile Justice system, while the remaining male and female were released to their parents.

None of the students on the bus were injured

I think all of the students should be suspended a minimum of 10 days or expelled, except the student who held the knife. He should be sent to a juvenile detention facility until he's 21.

Yes I agree with Linda, the kid with the knife deserves to be locked up and the other three need to be expelled and sent to a school for troubled children. Some kids these days!
