SO MUCH FOR WRITING OFF WINTER 04/05 !!

#1 Postby Anonymous » Fri Jan 21, 2005 7:00 pm

Well, here we go again ! A possible HECS maybe on the way for many areas of the mid AT/NE during the next 24 to 48 hours with very cold temperatures, strong winds, and crippling snowfall totals.

There were some that were ready to write off this winter a week ago just because we were under the influence of a SE ridge and warm temperatures !

But when looking at the calender, I knew that was incorrect.

C'mon, we all knew that wouldn't last ! There was strong evidence of a major pattern change the second half of January. Since then, temps have fallen to near record 54 below in Minnesota and 17 F in eastern SC so far. And now we are faced with a MECS, possibly a HECS.

This month might very well end up as the best month since February 2003 as for snow totals for the mid Atlantic and NE.

And winter will NOT be over after this event. Again, check the calender !

I hope your right Ken about this not being the possible last chance we have something significant happen this winter! You know down here in SC we are snow starved, ice is not fun for me, esp after losing power for 3 days last winter in the ice storm we had!!! I WANT SNOW!!! lol Hopefully we get some soon, i'm not giving up yet! :D

If SC is snow-starved, what does that make Atlanta? You've seen more frozen-types of wx there in SC than we have over the past 3 years.

I hope we in East KY get our chance, our last biggest snowfall was in 1993 when we got about 2 feet. Now...every winter all we see are a couple of clippers with 2 to 3 inches of snowfall. I want some of the major stuff.

Hey Jeny! Yes, you are correct in us having had more wintery type scenarios in the past 3 yrs. But, i'd rather have snow any day than have to deal with that ice, stuff is dangerous and causes a ton of problems! We haven't had any major snowfall at all in the past few years and i think we are long overdue. I have relatives in Atlanta and they are complaining about the weather too, saying they wish they got at least one good snow event for this winter. I want you folks in the Atl to get yours too, we are all united in the South here and i hope we all get buried in snow at least one time this winter! :D

TWC did a feature last night on the surprise ice storm of January 23, 2000 in Atlanta...and the one the following weekend.

The first one clobbered us. At 3:00 am, the tops of two very tall pine trees fell on our house, destroying the roof, and taking out the power to the whole neighborhood (transformer is on the pole in our yard). At 9:00 am another tree finished off our van.

So, I know what you're talking about with ice. I'd rather have snow or cold rain, than ice.

But, seriously, Atlanta has seen NOTHING in terms of snow in years. I've lived here since 1968. We have had major storms in 1973, 1983, 1993....and .... we're really well due for one.

I'm beginning to think this is going to be a snowless winter for us. I hope not, but I don't see it in the cards for us now. Very few of our storms are in February. January is usually the month for us, and it's almost over. The only year I can think of where this wasn't the case was March 1993, and that was the Superstorm and those don't come along every winter.

So....since we have satellite TV, we'll be watching the storm on the NYC/PA/BOS local TV channels we get!! Not the same as being there, but if I close all the blinds we could pretend..... LOL.

Well, everyone in the way of the storm, be safe and warm. Atlanta's day is coming. Eventually. Maybe. Nah....prolly not. At least not this year. ;)
